Imagine Valve made the Steam client open source. I don't see why not. Their core business is the platform itself. People from all over the place would fix all the tiny little annoying issues with it.

I think the drivers for these cameras are hundreds of thousands of lines of code that need to be ported to mainline linux to get anything out of them. And the stack of programs outside of the kernel (libcamera, pipewire) is also pretty incomplete which makes it even harder.

Is it just me or are the default apps in #GrapheneOS kinda outdated? I like the security and all, but it's a bit... idk... it feels weirdly dated but not at the same time.

It might be unintended, but I actually like that @npub1e7a…trdk doesn't turn off the wifi hotspot automatically. It stays on until I tell it otherwise. Very useful when carrying multiple mobile devices.

Things I learnt from socialising at #FrOSCon:
- The people who made your apps are very real, very nice and very few.
- I should fix existing projects instead of starting my own.
- Fixing bugs gets a lot easier if you simply sit down and just do it. And submit it, too.

I had an absolute blast at the first day of #FrOSCon. It's 2 am right now and I won't be home until 4 but it was absolutely worth it. I feel like I made some friends tonight.
It was lots of fun talking to @npub1clc…emga, @npub1u36…w5c4, @npub1466…uy9c, @npub164g…k0lj (in no particular order) and many others whoose fedi handle I don't know.

I'm so happy. When I introduced my wife to Linux Mint a couple weeks ago I thought she might take a good look at it and then keep using Windows. Which would've been fine.
But to my surprise, she's actually giving it a fair change to use it daily! I created a little penguin icon on her Windows desktop labelled "Reboot to Linux", using a handy tool called Bootnext¹. This way, she doesn't have to mess with boot managers.
There has been surprinsingly little issues. If you're curios, I will list them briefly in the next post.

I think these settings are important and they should be adopted.
However, I also think being able to reply to anything posted on the internet should be accepted as normal. It's a public space, like a market square or a pub. If I go out spreading my opinion, then other people can, will, and should react to that. Anything else will only increase the already existing loneliness problem in the world.
I do not condone harassment in any way, and it is certainly taking on terrible forms nowadays, but receiving both positive and negative reactions is essential for human social behavior.

I think the real reason is because (Android) smartphones want to suspend the actual CPU whenever possible and receive notifications via the less power hungry baseband modem. AFAIK it's capable of maintaining simple TCP connections on a very low level, which is what Google's FCM service is.

I think P2P messaging has too many hurdles to overcome and is a big technical challenge. First there is the NAT/Firewall problem and second there is smartphones' battery optimisers which essentially forbids keeping a connection at all times.
Come to think of it, I haven't used DeltaChat in over a year, but I love the idea. How does it handle mobile push notifications (if at all)?

How open is MacOS compared to Windows? Does it have annoying popups? Can you uninstall everything you don't want? Does it run useless crap in the background? I never used it, personally.

I've successfully set up [Mox](https://github.com/mjl-/mox) by Mechiel Lukkien as my new mail server. It handles SMTP, IMAP, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. It has a built-in spam filter, a web interface, webmail, autoconfiguration and it can show a checklist whether your DNS is set up correctly or not. All in a single binary! Pretty cool stuff. I'm planning to test various other solutions and document it on my blog soon.
