Took three attempts but I finally made it to the summit of Lookout Mountain. Very satisfied. The secret is climbing straight up from Hobo Lake instead of attempting the ridge.

I bought new tires today for my Accord. On a whim I decided to get all terrain tires for better traction on dirt and gravel roads. Somehow ended up buying all weather tires without knowing it. Bonus.

So very early in the morning I go to get water before departing. I accidentally filled my only clean water bottle with lake water. This is a bad situation. I now have no way to drink filtered water. A common water strategy among long-distance hikers is to have one or more “clean” bottles and one “dirty” bottle with a water filter screwed on top. Most commonly, 1 liter Smart Water bottles and a Sawyer Squeeze filter. (more)

I broke down and went to REI and bought a bear can this evening. As a concession to myself, only the smallest one, the BV425. I brought 2 days of food to test and it fits with some room to spare. Finally figured out the national park entrance pass and permit situation. Bought an annual entrance pass and booked a couple permits. Looks like I’m going to Olympic National Park this weekend!

I didn’t have my camera at the time but I saw an animal at Robin Lakes that I’d never seen before. It was about the size of a cat and mostly whitish with dark features on its head or face and a red tail. It wasn’t really scared of me at all. Internet search didn’t help.

I’m going from snow/hail storms last weekend to sunny and high 70s/low 80s (27C) in the mountains for the next three days. Tent dried out and ready to go. Planning to head south from Timothy Lake to partially fill in a gap I’m missing on the PCT. No idea what to expect in this section other than no/little snow and entering the Warm Springs Reservation.

I hiked for several hours in snow storms and cold temps until I couldn’t keep my hands warm anymore. Retreated to my tent to get dry and warm up. I want to be clear that I had the gear to survive the situation but the reality was it was going to be a less than comfortable night then packing up an icy tent in the morning at freezing temps. I bailed when the first meaningful break in the weather happened in late afternoon. Great decision.

There were no human or animal tracks in the snow when I was heading into the Indian Heaven Wilderness this morning but many possible lion and bear tracks on the way out a few hours later.

Thinking of naming this campsite Kamikaze Corner after the famous Portland intersection where several streets meet (multiple old forest roads lead here along with the trail).

@npub18z4…pkkh I would recommend using a trash compactor bag (thick trash bag) inside the backpack anyway and then putting most items in that and roll it closed. Nothing is waterproof. I reuse the same bag for a year or more.

I must be going through a mid-life crisis because I’ve started doing “spring cleaning” to prepare for [not sure exactly].
I have a 2011 Mac mini Server, attached Drobo, and an intel MacBook Air I want to erase and decommission.
Is just reformatting and reinstalling the OS on the Macs sufficient to get rid of the data before donating or should I do something more severe?
Data consisted of mostly movies and photos but also some tax and other documents. I’m not a high-value target.

Deschutes River: Camping Day 1
Explored the lower 14-mile section of the Deschutes River Trail. My first time hiking in a desert river canyon. I could have used more elevation gain but it was fun. I’ve become obsessed with canoe camping videos over the last couple months so I enjoyed being close to the river. Nothing more than a little light rain and I was dry by the end of the hike.

Harlan Valley: Camping Day 2
Hiked from the Marys Peak area through a little town in a valley called Harlan and then back up into the mountains on a national forest road. My favorite part was a new looking short steep trail in the middle of nowhere that connects two abandoned forest roads. This trail is so well maintained, very impressed. Lots of trail signs to guide the way and avoid danger.

Silver Star Camping: Day 2
From Silver Star, I made a loop via the Starway Trail, various forest roads, Silver Star Trail, and Ed’s Trail. Probably my toughest hike yet. 6,576 elevation, 3,440 active calories, and 20 miles over 9:20 hours. After the hike, I decided to end the trip on a high and go home before a small snow storm rolled in. Very satisfied.

Silver Star Camping: Day 1
The area around Silver Star Mountain is incredible. I needed this trip so badly, both physically and mentally. I slept at the trailhead and got up bright and early to check out the Chinook Trail. I only learned about this trail a couple days ago. Apparently an effort to build a loop trail around Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR.

What’s the current best waterproof USB-C rechargeable headlamp (torch)?
Heavy rain killed my Nitecore NU25 UL last weekend. Currently using my old Petzl Tactikka as a backup. It’s OK but I don’t like having to carry extra AAA batteries and the waste of using them.

Rogers Peak Camping: Day 1
I feel rejuvenated after feeling slightly depressed that backpacking season is over (for me). I’m a fair weather backpacker. Sleeping in the Pilot was a lot warmer than in a tent. Didn’t sleep great but still getting used to it. I explored a new road and enjoyed the sun and blue sky. Legitimately warm outside, so nice. After hiking, I got brave and drove up into the mountains to a new area.

Rogers Peak Camping: Start
I’m testing out camping in my SUV this weekend in the Tillamook State Forest. Sleeping in the back with the seats folded flat. Don’t have much other than my regular backpacking gear. Plus some jugs of water, jump starter, and extra clothes in case I get soaked. Plan is to explore deeper into the forest than I’ve been able to do day hiking.

We’ll see if it worked but I called T-Mobile to opt out of the plan migration. I enjoyed the completely overkill level of customer service. Apologized profusely for cheering in the background (call center partying?), thanked me for my years of service, apologized more, made sure I was happy with her service, mentioned I would get texted a survey, thanked me again. Now that backpacking season is over, I’m thinking about giving overlanding a try. I just don’t want to be in a tent in the cold and rain.
Plan is to start with my backpacking gear and go from there. Have a 2013 Honda Pilot. I can use it as a base camp for long day hikes.
Main concern is being stuck in the middle of the forest with a dead battery. Ordered a NOCO Boost Plus battery jump starter. Will get a couple storage bins to hold gear staying in the SUV.

Three Sisters Backpacking: A.M.
As many of you know, I bailed from my trip early due to stomach issues. Still saw some beautiful scenery in the Three Sisters Wilderness on my very long day. I’m feeling much better so far this morning so it might have just been a 24-hour bug.🤞🏼Very happy to be home. Drinking lots of electrolytes and resting.

Alright. I’m leaning towards bailing. I sincerely thank you all for your advice! I will admit if it weren’t for so many people (I think of you all as friends) telling me to bail I would be less likely. I’m getting emotional writing this. Haven’t responded to everything since i’m trying to rest. My coordinates are 44°8′43″ N 121°49′20″ W and I would be going back to the Lava Camp (Matthieu Lakes) trailhead off HWY 242. The PCT is the trail. I’m eating and drinking to feel as good as possible.

@npub1ge2…g93q Thank you! I’m drinking it slowly. Unfortunately I only have about a liter until I can get to a water source. I currently have to pee so not completely dehydrated. Closest water is 2 miles or 4 round trip.

Oh wow am I struggling this morning. My stomach has hurt real bad for 6 hours. I’m in the three sisters wilderness. I took some acid reducer and other stomach medicine. It’s hard to drink water but i’m forcing myself since i’m mildly dehydrated. No way I could eat. I think climbing south sister is out, not sure if I can complete the loop at this point. Probably going to make camp in 4 miles and try to sleep it off. I have limited resources on me but would appreciate any suggestions.

Benson Plateau Backpacking: Wrap
Woke up at the abandoned Indian Springs campground with more condensation on my tent than I’ve ever experienced. Completely soaked. I wanted sun but lesson learned not to set up camp without tree cover. Headed back on the Eagle Creek Trail to most likely see the waterfalls for the last time this year. I just love Twister Falls, third photo. 😍
