EVERY SINGLE THING for provincial nominee status (in any province) is tied to working full time as an on-off switch, on a work permit, not a study permit. My husband's remote work, even if it's out of the Toronto office, does not count. AND MY PHD WORK, IN PERSON, AT THE LOCAL UNIVERSITY, ALSO DOES NOT COUNT.
I literally have to QUIT my ACTUAL LOCAL WORK and do something stupid to demonstrate my commitment to sparkle motion, cough, provincial living.
This is your immigration system.

To consider just how insane this is: Spouse and I each have a path to provincial nominee status in Ontario, and I have a path in Newfoundland as well. We want Newfoundland over Ontario, and conveniently, Newfoundland will want us. It never, ever fills its quote of immigrant nominees. Not enough people are willing to come live there. Meanwhile, my spouse has a great remote job tied to Boston/Toronto. Our kids will go to school in NL. And, hey, I am a PhD student at NL's ONLY UNIVERSITY... uh oh.

The family process is really weird, in that one spouse has to be 'lead' and the other of us just doesn't count. If my spouse is lead, no one cares if I'm a student ... because no one cares about me at all. If I am lead, however, I can do NOTHING for my family while I have student status.

This morning I was legally advised to quit my Canadian PhD program because being a student is BLOCKING a path to permanent residency for my family.
Foreign university students are in extremely many ways DISADVANTAGED by Canadian process, not enabled by it. *Having graduated* from your universities gives a few points, if you can manage to stay solvent across years of paying dues to institutions gutted by austerity, but actually *being* a student is a bar.

This disparity notwithstanding, Canadian universities need to think about their American students this year in ways other than as a source of income. Border access issues, the need for some to cast a vote at home in truly urgent elections, and civil unrest and instability are piling atop Canadian student housing scarcity and a cost of living crisis to make it a very difficult year for American students in Canada.

Canadian students are the FOURTH LARGEST group of international students in the US, after China, India, and South Korea, with 41,392 enrolled in 2022. American students in Canada, on the other hand, don't even break the Canadian top ten; there are fewer than 10,000- both Colombia and Mexico send more students to Canada.

We need a (non-private-equity tied) collaborative community consultancy, stat. It will be really powerful if we can truly imagine WITHOUT outside interests who want our property whispering in our ear. I think setting that partnership and process up is indeed the medium-term trajectory but private interests and big money have a huuuuuge head start and are using their very skilled PR wing to sell church leaders a whole lot of nothing in exchange for futurity rights to property. Whew, it's a lot.

I research church closure (and behind that, church thriving and the contributions of the progressive church to neighborhood, municipality and region). What this increasingly means is that I receive urgent outreach with quite specific questions from congregations realizing they are facing the end (or more correctly, from one or more of their leaders or from someone worried about the building).
One the one hand, I understand. I share these questions.
On the other hand I CANNOT ANSWER THEM. 😂 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am not convinced that people did not resist Hitler early, given what I see these days. I imagine that the (early, non catastrophic) resistance stories simply got lost to time and to the real and widespread catastrophe that followed. It seems very likely that people noticed, spoke out, took risks, said and did what they could.
We assume that everyone was all in because thinking of Germans and then the world as dupes simplifies things vs. assuming there was a struggle, which lost.
