One option would be to allow users to connect via Bluetooth in a chain and eventually someone in the chain would have external internet access. Would also help keep connected when there is no internet connection.

I think they just ran out of money. Too early for a paid for version of Twitter. Had a nice vibe though. Hopefully this wi be something similar.
