Eventually the targets do become more random, if it gets to Krystallnacht levels of orgiastic violence, but it takes a lot for people to actually want to hurt someone else individually.

This is why they build up these myths. Nobody believes that immigrants are eating people's pets.
But the guy who wants to kick some specific immigrant's ass for "stealing"...a job opportunity, a girlfriend, etc? Once he hears "they eat pets", that's all he needs to hear to know that there won't be any consequences for hurting "pet eaters".

A quick primer on pogroms and racial violence, for those who haven't spent far too much time studying this stuff:
The danger isn't Nazis descending on your town. That's called a civil war, it's a different level of violence.
What real Nazis do is amplify existing hatred: lots of people are angry or jealous at someone else. They tell people the anger is justified if the target deserves it. Don't think "which neighbor is racist?", think "who would kill me for my car or my house?"

Dear Google,
When I search, I am not looking for The Answer. I am looking for sources. A search that generates only answers will be useless personally, and worse than useless professionally for me.
What I would really like is an internet search engine that works. Google did that once. Then they focused on other things and used it for ad revenue and it became the new Craigslist.
It would sure be nice if Google would reinvent an actual internet search engine.

I was telling a friend that while I'm enjoying watching Babylon 5, it lacks Kira Nerys. So I wanted to show her a few clips to illustrate this, and when I went to Youtube and searched for Kira Nerys Badass, it returned one scene of her punching Damar, a few scenes of Kira pregnant, a lot of Garak videos, and a video titled "Gul Dukat is a Pain in the Ass".
A search for scenes of Kira being a badass returned a video of Gul Dukat taunting her.

It accelerated America's rise and our alliance with Britain and the Five Eyes, a trend that had already begun pre-war and might have happened anyways.
In his book Sleepwalkers, Christopher Clark mentions that the Entente was a marriage of convenience, the UK entered it in part to keep Russia away from India (something the USSR tried post-war), and France was not a natural UK ally, but the war semi-solidified those alliances.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 The late 19th century is a pretty good comparison in terms of technological change outracing the government systems still stuck in feudal aristocracies.
Unfortunately, the forces of politics and technology collided in Sarajevo in June 1914, ending the that age (hardly the first) of globalization.
It sure would be nice to transition ages without a 30 year period of World Wars for the third or fourth time, though...
