I got a UPS to back up the power to my fiberoptic modem, router, pc, gaming console and my bitcoin node. It was pretty cool walking up to the wall outlet and yanking the power cord to the UPS and seeing everything still running off battery in less than a tenth of a 60hz cycle. Yes I could really up the ante if I turned the whole front yard into growing space. Vast swaths of BC and Alberta are bug killed. It’s a big part of the cycle that has led to the huge fires in western Canada for the last several years. But this has been happening as a natural cycle for hundreds of thousands of years. The only difference now is we have these dumb creatures building their infrastructure in the midst of it. And putting out fires/allowing fuel loads to increase. Literally everything that regulation touches has the opposite of the intended effect.

I’ll never forget the sense of wonder the first time I ever got my hands on a PC and used it to connect to another computer over a phone line.
It was 1992 and my first wife and I had just moved back to BC after a short 8 month stint in Ontario. We both planned to go back to school at the local college, so my in-laws let us turn half of their detached garage into a suite and live there while we did a year of upgrading.
Shortly after we moved in, I noticed that my father in law had a PC in the home office and I was ecstatic because we never had one at home in the 80’s. I had major FOMO after only getting to mess around on a friend’s Commodore 64 a few times in grade 8 and 9 up till that point.
The computer was a 386 PC running DOS 5 and my brother in law had a copy of iD Software’s first (and pretty much the first ever widely distributed) first person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D. We played that game for days. I just thought it was really cool because it was the first time I had ever seen an actual execution of a first person shooter similar to the dungeon style game I did a hand drawn/handwritten story board and concept for in the early days of Intellivision’s Dungeons and Dragons.
So anyway, weeks went on and we pretty much just gamed. We played Wolf3D and a really basic golf game mostly.
One of the kids in my physics class told me about BBS’s and how he was getting games from other users by connecting to them over his parents’ phone line. He gave me a list of local phone numbers that worked.
I looked on the back panel of the computer we had, and sure enough there was a phone jack to a 14.4 modem. It had never been used. I asked my father in law if he had any manuals and disks that came with the computer, and he said he thought there was a box in the crawl space with all of that stuff. I went digging and ended up finding a few disks and a big fat DOS manual. To do the command line stuff I needed to do to get the modem working, I ended up reading most of it. I had to learn how to install drivers and make folders and move files instead of just gaming.
I was obsessed. After a couple of weeks of reading and staying up late learning how to interact with the machine, I finally had a dial tone.
I will never forget how thrilled I was when I dialled that first number on the piece of paper my friend had given me, heard the annoying modem handshake sound, and boom, there’s a crude menu on the screen that said Okanagan BBS, with a bunch of folder names on it.
It was like a whole new world opened up to me. Books, games, articles, and pixelated girly pics lol.
Only a matter of weeks after I got my introduction to PC connectivity, I found out that my wife had a couple affairs, including a current one with my boss (who was also my best man at our wedding) that stretched back a full year before we even got married. I moved out.
It ended up being another 4 years before life brought me to a place where I could buy my first PC. I promptly corrupted a file in Windows 95 and was down for a month while I learned what I needed to learn to reinstall the operating system. All of the techs at the local computer store were treating computing like some sort of dark art, and they were hesitant to answer my questions. I guess to them, I was a potential repair customer. I said fuck that and was up and running again and designing Quake levels and doing some other fun stuff.
Work took me in directions other than ones related to computing and it was another couple years yet before I learned how to register a domain and build my first website. And that was just prior to yet another major life implosion that left me adrift for a few years without much money and a stable place of residence.
I often wonder what I would have done with computing, web design and coding if life had been a little more stable.
I guess it’s never too late to find out. I did a few company websites for friends over the years, but never had the time to really capitalize on it as a business. I’ve intentionally avoided starting a tech support business in the intervening years because I got remarried and we had kids, and I’ve had to stick with other skills that I could capitalize on faster. I’ve got some skills and have been the resident IT guy at every company I’ve ever worked for. But I just can’t handle fixing dumb shit that people do to their systems. I just don’t get any satisfaction out of that work. My loss I guess lol.

Ok. Revelations from last night. So like a noob, I had 3 grams and still hadn’t felt anything an hour and a half later. I thought maybe these mushrooms were bunk. So I had another 2 grams, making it the single biggest dose I’ve ever had. Went to sleep at about midnight after a nice night hanging out by the fire.
So at about 3 I woke up to go to the bathroom. Two words: tripping balls. I was aware from previous experiences that the slight feeling of anxiety was expected, so I didn’t let it get to me. But the visuals. Holy shit.
I am convinced that some of the origins of Man’s awareness of a higher power may have been discovered accidentally through chance ingestion of psilocybes. I wasn’t trying to guide the experience at all, but not only were there incredibly complex, colourful and moving patterns moving across my field of view, but they were consistently morphing into two repeating forms. One was a male figure sitting in the lotus position with his hands in a position of prayer. The other was a figure of a woman facing me, with arms outstretched and the thumb and middle finger touching, with the index finger and pinky slightly pointed. Both of them were covered with the patterns and colors, so it’s not like they were photographed. And both were emanating a calmness and sense of peace.
One interesting thing was the presence of fractal geometry. All of the patterns, regardless of how deep I looked into them, were infinitely scaled. And the colors were truly 256 million with a slight chrome finish.
Aside from the visuals that I knew to expect, my main purpose in doing this experiment was to see if there would be any revelations about my self or this world we are living in. The main things I felt as my ego dissolved, the nausea came, and the slight sense of anxiety persisted, was that:
1) we are all a tiny piece of the same consciousness
2) I have made big mistakes in my life and am far from perfect, but my motivations are not self serving or meant to make me appear to the world like something I am not.
I don’t know what to say other than this, other than pros and cons:
Pros:
- Cool visuals and seeing random figures of seemingly spiritual beings, that were emanating a sense of good will toward me.
- Stripping my ego away for a short time and allowing a real analysis of my motivations in how I deal with people.
Cons:
- anxiety
- inability to sleep
- runny nose
- watering eyes
- itchiness (all over)
- upset stomach
- lack of control of the duration of the experience ie having to ride it out, for better or worse.
Would do again? Not likely. I’ve experienced this a few times now, and I just don’t think there’s anything more there to learn. Maybe DMT or acid would be something to try, but I’m not sure I need to see anything otherworldly for now. I have the house all to myself today, tonight and all day tomorrow. The stereo has been cranked since I woke up. Got a little workout in. Read a little Ayn Rand. Might just have a fire tonight and go on a little vision quest. And see what the universe reveals when I am at totally at peace. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a really good trip. Dehydrator jerky works really well! My Traeger smoker snob friends didn’t believe it. Also I f you ever find a cheap cured smoked ham, it already has the cure and the smoke done for you and you can just add a bit of pepper to the slices. It’s great!

The few people I’ve tried being an Uncle Jim for didn’t even have the discipline to safely store their passphrases after being instructed specifically how to do it. Good luck having them remember how to generate and sign psbt’s and broadcast tx’s. We have a couple decades to go at least.

I asked my employer if at the very least I could administer my own deductions and just pay at tax time and their payroll software won’t even permit it anymore if you’re coded as an employee. The only answer is being a contractor for the same company but then my insurance, accounting, vehicle payment and corporate tax would be about equal to what I’m paying now. I feel like the matrix really has us, especially when it’s so easy to pin a guy down at a fixed address at a home they can also take if he evades tax. It’s almost time to exit stage left and go live in the bush. It’s a dilemma when you have dependents.
