Here's a suggestion for the politicians to consider: instead of encouraging ever more traffic on to congested roads, put the heavy freight back onto water and rail.
Too difficult? Too costly? I say it's not; we have the basic (& remnant) infrastructure; let's improve that to modern standards.
The benefits are manifold, from road safety to reduced carbon consumption.

As a latecomer to the party of economic theory, I've just ordered a copy of Keynes' tome (it might arrive tomorrow); I'm currently wading through Smith's "Wealth of Nations" and wondering why the neoliberals idolise someone who would have recognised them for what they are. I really struggled with Marx, but got the vague impression he may have been more sinned against than sinning.
I blame Prof. Kate Raworth, who lured me in with talk of doughnuts for all...

Tomorrow, Tuesday 18th June, is the last day for you to register to vote in the UK election on 4th July.
Apparently 8,000,000 who are eligible to vote haven't registered - ask your family and friends to check, then to register if they aren't on the list; and then to vote!
If you don't vote, you can't moan about the result!
Also - check you have valid ID.
Go to it!

If you're not on the UK electoral register, and wish to vote in the general election on 4th July 2024, you can register online before 23.59 on the 18th of June.
If you're a student living away from home, you can register in both places - but you can only vote in one constituency.
If you have no permanent address, you can still register to vote.

Simply reading local community pages on social media gives an indication of the problems of low housing availability: every week, one sees several desperate pleas for flats or house shares from people who have found work, and are prepared to move for that work; but cannot find anywhere affordable to live.
As a result, services suffer, businesses suffer; and communities wither and die...
