I think a lot of people just assume their data is protected because in a sane world it would be. But there are shockingly few entities required to handle it with any amount of care.

@npub1e7r…uf8g I think its a tragedy of the commons problem. Or something analogous. Each of these uber rich is working towards their own interests. They see what these things individually will do to their bottom lines and find moralizing ways to justify them to themselves. I don't think they do have grand long term strategy. I don't think they are thinking about what it will ultimately mean for them or anyone else. Not really. They are just rationalizing their selfishness.

My scifi brain has always thought a pocket dimension as an expanding series of tesseracts compressed into a small dimension of our space. So I've always envisioned it like that, with a door in our space, but a huge area on the other side of the door. I've thought a giant library made of cube rooms.

But somehow if you make your prompts into Captain's Logs, or make it about Star Trek, it makes the AI better answering the math questions. It makes no sense, and not even the people who made the thing can tell you why that that's the case.

The fact that you can pay so much for health insurance just to have to then pay so much for not covered items puts the lie to the complaints that any changes would be putting barriers between you and your doctor. The barriers are there and they are a mile high.
I'm sorry this is making your situation with your oldest harder. All I can say is I know a lot of us know your pain.

Recall that Trump was the one that gave Netanyahu the out to negotiations without the Palestinians. He's also the one who offered to recognize Jerusalem as belonging to Israel. If you're looking to stop what's happening over there. Your alternative is definitely not letting him get back into power. And in our shit system those are your options.

Because if the alternative is another Trump presidency with them openly planning to make it the last election, and effectively weaponize the government, it may still be. It doesn't mean a good long term prospect for the party though if your only reason detre is because everyone is scared to death of the alternative.
At some point a reckoning within the Democratic party is coming. It is overdue for a shift left. What you see now is the result of decades shuffle right

Also interesting that the gender skew on the highest reasons is inverse for men. So more men are no going, but less are saying it's because of cost or needing to work (though together it's still the majority). Relatively more of them say they didn't want to or need to. So they are giving up on careers in skilled labor in higher rates I guess?

Uneducated guess, but I would put it down to a combination of the soaring cost of tuition. combined with the low starting salaries. It is likely dissuading some from pursuing higher ed. The gender skew throws me a bit though.

French revolution was barely skimmed over in world history class, and hardly referred to elsewhere. Most US history curriculum in primary and secondary school is heavily US centric. It's part of why there's such an issue with navel gazing here. There is very little taught about the rest of the world, beyond what it is in relation to the US.

More or less yes. It's actually more recent than that. It dates to the 19th century. A Bible school teacher came up with it after reading revelation and thinking "but God's not going to let that happen to me, right?" And he made up a whole new part of Christianity to explain why he'd miss the bad stuff

1. Many people here don't want to be part of any commercial social media, regardless of whether it's Twitter or not.
2. It doesn't have to be a winner take a competition. Twitter was never the largest SM. Also, most people here don't make money doing this, so no one here is being squeezed out.
3. If they do federate, people can interact with people there, but with no ads, and no invasive tracking. That may pull people here from there.
