Dhīḥ! Before the wisdom-being Mañjuśri,
I reverently bow down.
Here I shall explain the key points of Trekchö—
Thorough Cut.
Do not alter the mind but allow it to settle as it is.
And, in such a state, look naturally within.
There will unfold an experience that is indescribable,
Which has no fixed character as either this or that,
And the natural radiance of which will not cease.
This is the genuine state, the natural condition,
The actual dharmatā, beyond conception.
It is the insight born of natural luminosity,
The view: like a mountain, left as it is.
As you simply remain in that natural state,
There is neither meditation nor distraction.
Without suppressing, cultivating, evaluating or analysing,
Allow yourself to settle fully into the genuine state.
This is the natural concentration of dharmatā,
Uncorrupted by the bonds of deliberate action.
Abiding in the yoga that is the King of Space,
This is meditation: like the ocean, left as it is.
As you are settled like this,
Any thoughts and impressions that stir within
And any appearances that occur without,
Should neither be prevented
nor encouraged but left as they are.
As long as you do not stray from this natural state,
Whatever unfolds will bring neither benefit nor harm.
Without concern for good or bad,
acceptance or rejection,
This is action: appearances, left as they are.
As you make progress, all that appears and exists
Will become a single all-embracing sphere
of aware-emptiness,
Within which everything is entirely perfect and complete.
This happens effortlessly,
is spontaneously accomplished.
Any striving to adopt or abandon simply fades away,
And hopes and fears for saṃsāra
and nirvāṇa are no more.
The primordial nature is made manifest —
The fruition: awareness, left as it is.
This instruction including four ways
of leaving things as they are,
Is the ultimate purport of the Thorough Cut.
With these key points, liberation will swiftly be attained

Translator’s Forward
“The Song of the Debate Between Wake and Dream is an important work by the great Buddhist scholar Ju Mipham Rinpoche (18461912). It has been widely studied and taught by many Tibetan Buddhist masters (especially those of the Nyingma tradition, such as from Larung Buddhist Academy). This work is about a debate between two imaginary figures Wake, representing one’s waking experience, and Dream, representing the dream experience. Despite the fact that the language is easy to understand, it has very profound meanings. The debate actually shakes one’s fundamental attachments and establishes the core view of Buddhism, namely emptiness, or the illusory nature of all phenomena. Following the debate, the second half of the work allegorizes the essence of Buddhist practice of the wisdom tradition. For spiritual practitioners, it is a very important text and should be studied carefully.
So far, I did not find any mention of this great work on Englishlanguage web pages, so I decided to translate this text on my own. The text was originally written in Tibetan. This translation is mainly based on the Chinese text translated by Khenpo Yeshe Phuntsok, a great Buddhist scholar from Larung Buddhist Academy. My understandings and inspirations are mainly from my Buddhist teacher Tersar Yingrik Drubpa Rinpoche, who gave this teaching in mid 2018. Another source of reference is the teaching notes by Master Zhiyuan. I also want to thank Elan Hourticolon Retzler, Samantha, and Kent Wilcox for helpful suggestions. In the future, it is my hope that there will be additional English language commentaries about this work.
I also hope that the translation of this work will inspire people who have been struggling with philosophical problems like the Brain in a vat, or the Dream argument. Contrary to the philosophies, debates, efforts, and conspiracies made by various theorists, the Buddhist answer to these questions is simple: “Yes, we are living in a dream, but it is our own mind who is creating all the dreamlike experiences, so we should work with our mind.” The essence of this answer may be partially seen in the popular movie The Matrix.
Now, what should we do? Simply follow and maintain one’s curiosity, glean the core meaning of the debate, and carefully examine the nature of reality. It will give you the deepest of inspirations.

The Song of the Debate Between Wake and Dream

“Om Swasti (may all be auspicious),
Homage to the sublime Manjushri .
After sincere prostration, I say the following.
The wonderful experience in the dream last night I had,
The daytime phenomenon I now encounter,
Those two initially arise in a similar way,
Those two eventually disappear in a similar way.
Dream holds that what appears in the dream is real,
Wake thinks that what appears
when one is awake is real.
Now Wake and Dream debate on who is real.
Wake, while solidifying his appearances, says:
“Dream, your appearance is a deceptive illusion.”
Dream, being fickle and chaotic, refutes:
“not only I am illusory, you are also deceptive!”
“I, Wake, am not deceptive. There is clear proof of that:
things clearly appear so I am real.”
Dream, being honest, replies to Wake:
“The same is true for Dream, so your statement is not definitive!”
[Wake:] “Today, you disappeared, so it is definitive.”
[Dream:] “Tomorrow, you will also disappear, so it is not definitive!”
[Wake:] “I experience directly (through my senses), so it is definitive.”
[Dream:] “I also experience things directly, so it is not!”
[Wake:] “My day experience is stable and lasts long, so it is definitive.”
[Dream:] “There are both longlasting as well as fleeting phenomena in both Wake and Dream!”
[Wake:] “In a dream, one can go through a mountain in no time.
I will admit that you are real if one can do this when one is awake.”
[Dream:] “If now there are proper conditions, one also achieves that ,
Without conditions, there is no way to do that even in a dream!”
[Wake:] “It does appear without conditions in a dream.”
[Dream:] “Then, why it is not constantly like this?!”
[Wake:] “You dream about dead relatives with deep affection,
and you could also have kids or nephews you never had in reality.
I, Wake, do not have such things.”
[Dream:] “If the appearance (of relatives and so on) could not establish their existence,
Why you think your kids and and other relatives exist when you are awake?”
[Wake:] “(In a dream) the deceased
may come back to life.
The nonexistent may appear to exist.
They existed in you Dream, but have now disappeared.”
[Dream:] “Things that have passed on
in your eyes are seen by me,
Phenomena nonexistent for you appear for me,
Our positions are fundamentally equal!”
[Wake:] “Though one may enjoy heavenly cuisine in the dream
that cannot dispel the hunger and thirst after waking up.”
[Dream:] “One may have a peaceful nap in a magnificent palace.
That cannot protect you against rain in the dream!”
[Wake:] “You only arise from delusion and have no real significance.”
[Dream:] “The feelings of hunger and so on in the waking state are also illusory!”
[Wake:] “When waking up, one realizes that the dream is unreal.
In a dream, how can you know the unreality of the waking experience?”
[Dream:] “The dream experience exposes
the unreality of the waking experience.
How could the waking experience disprove
the existence of dream experience?”
At that time, Wisdom, the Chief Justice,
sends Miraculous Wisdom, the Judge,
To tell the two debating parties:
“if you keep arguing like this,
there could be infinite words, but the evidence is already enough.
Let me adjudicate for you two.
“Both of you are real, but at the same time also unreal.
When not examined, both are real at their own positions.
“When examined, every change of phenomenon
leads to a revelation.
Actually (the two are) equal without differences.
“Although both of you are unreal,
Dream admits his delusion, hence he has the quality of being honest.
“Wake, you are delusional but refuse to admit it.
Being so stubborn, and not giving up the wrong idea, you should be punished.
“Dream, though being dull and delusive, at least has integrity.
Wake, though being astute and skillful, is actually more ignorant.
“The stableness and unstableness
are conditioned upon habituation.
The two (dream and waking experience)
are same in terms of effects.
“Now, Wake. You should follow after Dream.
The view and action should be unified for both of you.”
After saying so, (the Judge) ties up Wake
with the rope of mindfulness,
and hands the rope to Dream, not allowing Wake to leave
“You two should not argue but live in harmony,
Otherwise, you will become the demon bringing sufferings to the billionfold (entire) universe.
“If in harmony, you would be the guide of the world of three times (past, present and future).
Understanding that, both of you will have benefits.”
From here on, Wake and Dream know that they are not different.
And they treat phenomena from both sides equally.
At that moment, the debate ends between the two.
Then, the perceptions of the two minds are unified into one.
Combining the words of same and different,
Wake and Dream sing an improvised song together:
[Wake & Dream:] “‘We are different
and different’, people would say.
We are actually same and same. They are wrong.
“The significance of same and same,
is mentioned by few, and understood by fewer.
“Understand that the waking perception is equality,
and the dreaming perception is the same. It is not deceptive.
“This meaning is extremely important, but those who are ignorant think
that Wake and Dream (are different and) appear alternately.
“Now, the teaching from the King of Magical Illusion
is not just plain words. We carefully look into its meanings.
“In the blissful play of touching each other,
we taste the sweetness without eating.
“We enjoy the intoxicating dance without drinking,
we watch the miragelike drama without rehearsing.
“O. This is the supreme teaching, surpassed by nothing.
Dear friends, please remember this in your heart.”
Then, the two unite into one,
and the one dissolves into space.
Then, Miraculous Wisdom the Judge
presents this result to Wisdom the King.
The King is delighted and smiles:
“Your mediation is in such a good manner.
“From here on, up till to the end of space,
you may soar freely like a Garuda bird with wings widely open.
“The sovereignty of the Kingdom of Fearless Emptiness,
I now bestow on you. Please kindly protect it!
“In this garden of emptiness,
wind blows, and pure honey falls.
“Eat it, eat it, as you go.
O. This will never be exhausted!
“There, the barren woman’s daughter,
virtuous and beautiful,
being pleasant and satisfactory, joyfully plays.
“This neveraging youthful consort is bestowed on you,
in union with you. Enjoy the miraculous bliss.
“With the bliss of touching her,
all the ease and pleasure in this three worlds,
“are like vomit compared to nectar.
The craving towards those (mundane happiness) now should be loosened!
“As such, if you say this and act according to it,
you will be in union with Wisdom the King.”
The abovementioned metaphorical words are of experiential nature, are easy to understand when carefully examined, otherwise obscure are of significant meaning if carefully pondered, otherwise they are insignificant, and are written at the place of great bliss by the one named “Dhih!”

“Jamgön Mipham Gyatso, also known as Ju Mipham Rinpoche, was a great Nyingma scholar practitioner and writer of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was born in the Derge region of eastern Tibet into the Ju clan, a family said to be descended from the ancient Tibetan gods.
In his life story, he is described as a child prodigy who was able to memorize and retain all the texts he read from an early age. Throughout his life, he was said to have been able to remember and deliver commentary on many texts after receiving only the reading transmission.
At the age of fifteen, he undertook eighteen months of intensive retreat on Mañjuśrī, who was his lifetime meditation deity. Later in life, he was often said to be an emanation of that wisdom deity. After his retreat, he confided to some of his students that from then on he had always been able to understand any text he read. From his guru Patrul Rinpoche, he received teachings on
Śāntideva’s Bodhicharyavatara.
It was said that Patrul Rinpoche confirmed that after only five days of teaching, Mipham Rinpoche had mastered both the words and the meaning of this seminal text.
Mipham Rinpoche received teachings from luminaries of both the Sarma and Nyingma schools. He was a student of the eminent masters Jamgön Kongtrul with whom he studied grammar, and his root guru Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo from whom he received the complete transmission of the orally transmitted or Kama and revealed or Terma lineages.
His collected works fill more than thirty volumes and span an extraordinary range of topics. Although he is famous for his philosophical works, he also wrote treatises on astrology, medicine, poetry, politics, and tantra. He wrote a popular compilation on the epic story of the great warrior king, Gesar of Ling, an emanation of Guru Rinpoche. Mipham Rinpoche also composed devotional works such as a large number of aspiration prayers, sādhanas, and guru yogas. Of the sādhanas perhaps the most popular is the Treasury of Blessings, a sādhana of Buddha Śākyamuni.
It is said that Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo requested him to write commentaries on many of the core texts of Indian Buddhism that reflected the thinking of the Nyingma tradition. Prior to this undertaking, most of the Nyingma monasteries had relied upon commentaries produced by the Sarma schools. In fulfilling his lama’s command, Mipham reinvigorated the intellectual milieu of the main Nyingma shedras, and his texts are studied today as the core texts. In addition, he introduced the training in formal debate into the Nyingma shedras.
His commentaries include those on the Mulamadhyamakakarika or Root Stanzas on The Middle Way by Nagarjuna; the Madhyamakāvatāra, Introduction to the Middle Way by Chandrakirti; the Jñānasārasamuccaya, or Compendium on the Heart of Wisdom by Aryadeva. He also authored commentaries on treatises of logic by Dharmakīrti and Dignāga; commentaries on the Five Treatises of Maitreya; and commentaries on several works of Vasubandhu including the Abhidharmakosha. In addition, he authored The Lion’s Roar: A Commentary on Sugatagarbha.
Mipham and the Two Truths
Mipham’s commentary on the ninth chapter of Shantideva’s Bodhicaryavatara, the Shertik Norbu Ketaka or Ketaka Jewel was criticized sharply by Geluk scholars, particularly his contemporaries Japa Dongak and Pari Lopzang Rapsel. His presentation of the two truths refuted the previous explanations of Je Tsongkhapa and the Sakya master Gorampa Sonam Senge. Also controversial was his commentary on the Madhyamakalamkara of Śāntarakṣita which similarly privileged the ultimate truth. His emphasis on Buddha Nature as the ground of all and the link between sutra and tantra is fundamental. Modern biographers note that one of Mipham’s unique perspectives was the integration of tantric and Great Perfection (Dzogchen) view onto sutra interpretation.
Mipham the Practitioner
Although he is most famous as an author and scholar, it appears that Mipham spent much of his life in retreat. The colophons of his works mention that they were written during breaks from his retreats. He also composed a number of short pithy advice texts on the key points of Dzogchen practice. In the 1870s and 80s, he spent about thirteen years in retreat in the “Tiger Den” cave of Rongme Chime Karmo Taktsang near Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo’s monastery, Dzongsar.
Mipham Rinpoche passed away in 1912 at his hermitage at Ju, north of Dzogchen Monastery.”
“According to one account shortly before he died, Mipham told his attendant:
Nowadays, if you speak the truth, there is nobody to listen; if you speak lies everyone thinks it is true. I have never said this before: I am not an ordinary person; I am a bodhisattva who has taken rebirth through aspiration. The suffering experienced in this body is just the residue of karma; but from now on I will never again have to experience karmic obscuration. … Now, in this final age, the barbarians beyond the frontier are close to undermining the teaching. [So] there is no point whatsoever in my taking rebirth here…I have no reason to take birth in impure realms ever again.
This may be interpreted as a statement that his mindstream would have no further 'emanations' (Wylie: sprul pa (emanation body); sprul sku (tulku)). Conversely, according to another account in which he mentions the mindstream in passing and prophesies the shortly before his death to his student Khenpo Kunphel:
Now I shall not remain long in this body. After my death, in a couple of years hence, war and darkness shall cover the earth, which will have its effect even on this isolated snow land of Tibet. In thirty years time, a mad (smyo) storm of hatred will grow like a fierce black thundercloud in the land of China, and in a further decade this evil shall spill over into Tibet itself, so that Lamas, scholars, disciples and yogis will come under terrible persecution. Due to the demon-king Pehar taking power in China, darkness and terror ('bog) will come to our sacred land, with the result that violent death shall spread like a plague through every village. Then the three lords of materialism (gsum-gyi-kla-klos) and their cousins will seize power in Tibet, spreading war, famine and oppression. No one will be safe. Now, very soon, my mind-stream will be gathered up in the pure-land of Tusita, from whence many emanations [of myself] shall then come forth in future years. I shall not take rebirth in Tibet. In twenty years, seek me in the northern lands of distant Uttarakuru, and elsewhere, east, west, north and south. Fear not, we shall be re-united again, as father and son. Now go!
In the above account, shortly after the departure of Khenpo Kunphel he stated publicly, "Now, soon I shall depart. I shall not be reborn again in Tibet, therefore do not search for me. I have reason to go to Shambhala in the north."
Subsequently, a number of emanations have been recognized.
According to E. Gene Smith "At least three rebirths were recognized in the decade following his death: 1) Zhe chen Mi pham (a grandnephew of Mi pham rgya mtsho); 2) Tshe dbang bdud 'dul (1915/16-42) the last prince of Sde dge; 3. Khyung po Mi pham, an incarnation recognized by Rdzong gsar Mkhyen brtse 'Jam dbyangs chos kyi blo gros."

Awareness is its appearances and appearances are awareness. Or knowing is being and being is knowing.
“In order to be introduced to the dependent origination of the confluence of causes and conditions, consider this: Lucid, luminous absolute space, as the ground, having the potential to manifest any kind of appearance, serves as the cause; and consciousness that grasps at the ‘I’ serves as the contributing condition. In dependence upon the confluence of these two, all appearances manifest like illusions.
All appearances are not other than the ground, and they are of one taste with the ground itself, just as all the planets and stars reflected in the ocean are not other than the ocean, and are of one taste with the water itself.
Due to grasping at the ‘I,’ ‘self’ and ‘other’ appear as if truly existent in the panoramic sweep of the expansive, all-pervasive absolute space of the ground. These appearances are like bubbles emerging from water. The lucid luminosity of the empty absolute space of the ground is crystallized into self-appearances to mental consciousness.
Due to this becoming reinforced, various delusive appearances manifest, which are like hallucinations caused by pressure on the nerves of the eyes or by disturbances in the channels due to the vital energies. Although various appearances from the ground manifest to a consciousness that grasps at the ‘I,’ they do not waver from or occur outside of that ground."

“If we look for a perceiver, we won’t find one. We do think, but if we look into the thinker, trying to find that which thinks, we do not find it. Yet, at the same time, we do see and we do think. The reality is that seeing occurs without a seer and thinking without a thinker. This is just how it is; this is the nature of the mind. The Heart Sutra sums this up by saying that “form is emptiness,” because whatever we look at is, by nature, devoid of true existence. At the same time, emptiness is also form, because the form only occurs as emptiness. Emptiness is no other than form and form is no other than emptiness. This may appear to apply only to other things, but when applied to the mind, the perceiver, one can also see that the perceiver is emptiness and emptiness is also the perceiver. Mind is no other than emptiness; emptiness is no other than mind. This is not just a concept; it is our basic state.
The reality of our mind may seem very deep and difficult to understand, but it may also be something very simple and easy because this mind is not somewhere else. It is not somebody else’s mind. It is your own mind. It is right here; therefore, it is something that you can know. When you look into it, you can see that not only is mind empty, it also knows; it is cognizant. All the Buddhist scriptures, their commentaries and the songs of realization by the great siddhas express this as the “indivisible unity of emptiness and cognizance,” or “undivided empty perceiving,” or “unity of empty cognizance.” No matter how it is described, this is how our basic nature really is. It is not our making. It is not the result of practice. It is simply the way it has always been.

Lady Tsogyal asked the Lotus Master, Padmasambhava:
"I beg you to bestow a way for any person whether of the foremost, average, or lesser capacity, to decisively settle the awakened state right now.
The master replied:
"The root of all phenomena is contained within your own mind. This awakened mind is present in every living sentient being. Moreover, it is the single sphere of dharmakaya and has neither shape nor color. lt has no substance or material characteristics. lt is present as a vast, empty knowing that is uncreated since the very beginning. To recognize this experience to be self-existing is known as Samantabhadra of the view or the single sphere of dharmakaya. This single sphere, the dharmata that is awakened mind, not made of anything whatsoever-is empty in essence and cognizant by nature. To simply remain in this continuous state is known as the meditation that combines the realization of all buddhas. To remain in this state, in which there is nothing to be cultivated nor anything to stray towards- is known as the self-existing conduct beyond meeting and parting. Within this single sphere of dharmakaya, there is nothing that is not pure perfection; from the mandalas of conquerors above, to the hellish worlds below-all are equally pure perfection. Therefore it does not differ whether in painful states or the awakened state, nor between buddhas and sentient beings. Moreover, this is not something that was just created, but rather has been spontaneously present from the very beginning, and
therefore the fruition dharmakaya is a self-knowing wakefulness. It is seen right now by means of your guru's instruction, and, as it is not something that can be cultivated or achieved, it is a pure perfection. I have nothing to teach besides this, so keep it in your heart, Lady of Kharchen."

Perfect Wisdom and The Vehicle to Enlightenment
The Buddha says that enlightenment is an understanding of the present moment. If everything in life is transitioning, that which is pure unalterable truth is that the here and now always IS. If one were to try to describe and define it in names and terms, ONE would ultimately fall short. Why is this? Because the here and now quite simply is the source of all names and terms. How then can something which is the leaves of the tree then ever be its defining roots?
All that IS always exists NOW. This is always undeniably so. For that reason, if one were to try and define any one aspect of reality, one would always fall short. Why is this so? Because anything in existence exists in this NOW. As a consequence, such as this is, it too is an embodiment of the here and now. We as well as all fundamental phenomena in existence are just the here and now playing with itself experiencing itself.
Those who understand the now are styled as Buddhas. One of the ten titles of the Buddha is Tathagata. This is translated as thus come one or abiding one. It is to implore that a Buddha is one that has fully understood that their original nature ever abides in this one moment.
Just like the present moment our enlightened nature and by extension the enlightened nature of all things ever IS. It is always there right in front of us. Though for those of us that are not aware of it, we are styled as blocked from awakening. Enlightenment or rather enlightened nature is not something one can lose and likewise not something one can take. Why? Because enlightenment is just this NOW. It is always there. The notions of taking or giving are just aspects of it. Trying to catch it then is like trying to catch empty space. One can imagine doing so but in truth it cannot be done.
What is the reason for beings to be unenlightened and for suffering to exist?
The Buddha explains that life is suffering. The present moment is ever undeniably changing and transitioning. As a consequence, there is no way to avoid moments of happiness and moments of sadness. “There is no suffering and there is no end to suffering. There is no ignorance and no end to ignorance.” Suffering will always be there; however, the Buddha styles the cycle of conditional suffering as for those who suffer being attached to the states of mind and, being so, are led astray from the original truth that the here in now is what’s truly ultimately real.
Conditioned suffering in Buddhism is explained as originating from craving attachments. Due to these attachments beings associate what is real with their states of mind and not with the here and now. The result is cycling life after life chasing after what is originally always there right in front of you. A person who has attained enlightenment will not cease to suffer, however they will always be fundamentally aware that their true home is always with them in this here and now. Such people are a refuge to themselves as well as all beings.
One may ask: How does one find enlightenment if they do not understand enlightenment? The answer is a simple one. The original enlightened masters are as those who built great ships to ferry us across to the other shore solely by our own efforts and practices. For those of us that practice the proper spiritual paths, in time we will awaken to an awareness of what unreal attachments we were holding onto we were not originally aware of. At such times beings naturally make practice abandoning a truth which was partial for a more complete one. The notion of the vehicle to enlightenment is sometimes explained as a raft used to cross a stream of suffering. Even after the stream is crossed the raft too is a burden and must be abandoned.
What is the nature of true understanding? True understanding embraces the here and now. Anything that has its basis on assumptions, mental states of mind or any other form of conditioned attachments is imagined or illusory understanding. All that is based on illusory notions that do not embody the here and now are impermanent and subject to change and transition, ending and beginning. How then can they ever be the root of true understanding? A mastery of any one trait skill attainment or understanding then can never ever truly be one which is masterful if it is based on such conditioned cravingly attached notions to a mental state, disposition, opinion or notion.
The Buddha in the Diamond sutra offers the Gatha for contemplating illusory causes and conditions. For those who are aware that craving attachments are unreal, such people are as those who have a light that illuminates the unreal from the real. For those who do not, they are stuck mired in the darkness not knowing how to distinguish the good from the bad.
The four line Gatha in the Diamond Sutra:
All conditioned Dharmas
Are like Dreams, Illusions, Bubbles of Shadows;
Like Drops of Dew or Flashes of Lighting;
Thus Should they be Contemplated
One more and awareness of our original nature is a priceless gift. It is understanding that is timeless beyond all change, not subject even to the notions of ending, beginning or conditional value. This is as a priceless truth one cannot ever quantify. When one knows it, it will forever be with oneself. It is as merit equivalent to packing all of empty space with jewels from moment to moment.

Let go of all beliefs and do not hold on to anything. Only by seeing the space like unconfined nature of mind you will be able to destroy negative thoughts. In the true nature of mind there is no existence or non-existence, no this or that, no truth or untruth, no good or bad, no right or wrong. All worldly affairs seem futile when you rest in this nature, that abides like the expanse of space transcending time.
Meditation means to first recognize and then habituate to the nature of mind. First you must understand the basic nature of mind. This mind is a single ground within which we are one. Once you have recognized the nature of mind, you must always sustain it, uphold it, without falling into distraction. To habituate this present awareness is meditation. No matter what external condition may arise, happiness or suffering, you should never stray from this clear awareness that recognizes everything that arises. You should practice mindful awareness in all your activities; this is the perfect conduct. The view, the meditation, and the conduct are all mind, the single ground. There are many thoughts that always arise, but thoughts are impermanent; they come and go. The mind from which they arise, however, abides like space; it never comes and goes. It is always there, it has always been there, and it will always be there. It is like space, or a vast ocean, or a mirror.
It never goes anywhere, just like space. Therefore, do not cling to the temporary thoughts. No matter how much you cling to them you cannot actually hold on to them, as they are impermanent by nature. Rather, observe that which never goes away, the clear knowing awareness that recognizes all the thoughts arising. This awareness is the buddha within you; it is your true nature. Whatever thoughts arise, negative thoughts, sadness, afflictive emotions, do not follow them but continue to observe with mindfulness. When this mindfulness is sustained, arising thoughts will naturally dissipate without the need to abandon them. This awareness must be upheld, not only in meditation sessions, but also during all your activities. No matter what you experience, happiness or suffering, it does not affect your awareness; it always is as it is. This nature is buddha nature, and every being has it.

Yea I think the attention span of people has been manipulated to be very low and to treat it almost like a meat market. Few seem interested in getting deep and that's something I need in relationship. Yea it might just be hard to find people in general that have done the inner work to be ready for something real. Humans exclusive a lot of suffering and trauma and if they haven't developed the tools to be healthy in relationships they end badly. I feel like a lot of people have given up on that in these dating scenes just due to how unhealthy people are in mind, body, and soul.
I had to do a lot of work sitting in vipassana for years and doing other various types of meditation to go through all that stuff and it wasn't until a few years ago that I finally felt I was ready after recognition of anatta happened on my 30th bday in the midst of the worst depression I ever went through.

On the final period of the teachings of the Buddha:
Enlightenment can be explained to be as just an awareness that we are always in this here and now. It is not something attainable or something that can be lost. We all exist in the present moment so, for each of us, it is always there whether we are aware of it or not.
The Life Span of the Buddha implies that this Buddha-Nature like the present moment always IS. One’s Buddha nature is just an embodiment of this NOW which is always and forever just partaking of the aspect of abiding. This can be styled to be as everlasting and permanent.
It is not only the Buddha who has this vast lifespan but also fundamentally the root base nature of all beings. We all possess the Buddha nature hence we all fundamentally have this equivalent Life Span.
Shakyamuni’s resources come from his enlightenment. Enlightenment is fundamentally at harmony with all of reality. It does not give way to misunderstandings that arise from craving attachments to the world which cannot be overlooked by ordinary beings. Such as this is, enlightened resources are perfectly dynamic and unrestricted in their interactions and interrelations.
The enlightened faculty of every being has equivalent resources at its disposal. Just like Shakyamuni, through the teachings of the Lotus Period we can draw from the resources of the Bodhisattva’s of the Earth.

Yea I think it's the messed up incentives for the company running the platform. It's not profitable for them to actually help people find love. I also don't like how it incentivizes the swipe culture either as someone who appreciates genuine human connection and can't stand vapid and shallow mindsets that things like tinder incentivize people towards.
Honestly if I could choose this is one of my first ideas for what to design but the timing would also need to be right to find a market large enough to steal the network effects of those platforms.

Behavioral scientist Abraham Maslow's work on the Hierarchy of Needs was somewhat accepted by Psychology, and much was soundly rejected; as the ego-centric could not accept that his Self-Actualization was merely a stepping stone to a Higher Level of Human Potential called Transcendence.

In fact there is no such thing as human nature. What we call human nature is really nothing other than habit energy.
I think it would be more accurate if we called it that because human nature carries a sense of something that can't be changed or is inescapable. So there's a lot of human action that gets excused by that term.

No it's habit energy carried on through generations in the mental, emotional, social, and environmental conditioning which shapes the individual, their beliefs, and views through culture. While at the same time the culture is shaped by individual points of view.
When we call it habit energy we see that those acts that are destructive to the self/ other are indeed a choice although unconscious to many. There's always the option for redemption you are not a slave to it.

All I have to say on recent events is this:
It's easy to manipulate people into seeing the other as an enemy when governments have control of the information presented to citizens. They have to divide to conquer and dehumanize the other side. People have to be motivated to hatred or belief in superiority through mental, emotional, social, and environmental conditioning. Rarely do the people ever become aware of the atrocities committed in their name by governments.
The human family must learn to play cooperative games to survive the insane amount of technological capacity and total lack of wisdom to employ it that we currently have.
I think over time bitcoin fixes this because it is a system with 0 monetary entropy. So over time since there is no loss of wealth but only increase as productive capacity increases all people benefit from the advancement equally as their purchasing power increases. Over a long period of time this can change human value systems and unhelpful habit energies as bitcoin transitions individuals into its cooperative game where people aren't incentivized to lie, cheat, and steal to keep up with their loss in purchasing power.
This in turn creates abundance over time as we transition from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset which obviates the root cause of the need for one group to claim supremacy of themselves and inferiority of the other to justify why they deserve access to our control over resources and the other doesn't.
I'm thinking of course on a 500 year timeliness perhaps longer or shorter depending on how quickly people collectively understand the game that is being presented.
How to move from self destructive to cooperative games that can advance us to type 1 on the kardashev scale and beyond.
I have faith in humanity to eventually leave these barbaric ways behind and play a more cosmic survival game.

To be free from attachment to desires is the greatest freedom. That doesn't mean don't desire, it just means to let go/ let life lead when things don't go as intended.

Awareness is Everything

Awareness/Being is Everything. Whatever you experience, you are always aware of that experience. Awareness is always part of every experience. There are not two things: Awareness and the experience.
The experience is the energy of Awareness manifesting as that energy event.
The experience is the Awareness of it.
We are nothing but the unfolding events of experience as Awareness.
We are everything in that everything is Awareness being everything.
Being a separate self is Awareness being that experience of separate self-hood.
There is no separate Awareness that is viewing the experience as the experience is itself Awareness.
You cannot separate the waves from the ocean. Experiences are waves of Awareness and one cannot separate the Awareness from the event as the event is itself Awareness eventing.
In whatever we say, do or think, all of these experiences are just Awareness manifesting AS those thoughts, words or actions without any separation between the Awareness of and the experience.
Even the self of ego consciousness is Awareness appearing AS that egoic self.
There is no personal Awareness as my Awareness or your Awareness. Who is there to be liberated? There is the experience of the thought “my Awareness” and “your Awareness”, but these are also experiences of a non-personal and universal Awareness appearing as those thoughts of “my” and “yours”.
In this way the entire ocean is present AS the smallest wave.
Just noticing and being Aware as a practice, is Awareness arising as that.
In such a practice Awareness has nothing to gain. In not practicing being Aware, Awareness has nothing to lose.
All experiences are equally Awareness appearing AS those experiences.
Awareness is not more present in some experiences and less in others. No matter the size of the wave, all waves are still equally ocean.
That Awareness is appearing AS thinking and AS the absence of thinking.
Be clear here, thinking is Awareness appearing AS thinking. When Awareness is appearing AS a moment of knowing itself AS Awareness, thinking (ignorance and delusion) are absent because both are mutually exclusive appearances of Awareness.

Conversation with a fellow dharma practitioner that i find valuable:
A:
What has been called “presence” is the increased clarity of undivided awareness itself that comes when attention is anchored onto any object of knowledge that arises in the field of awareness. Two things are being fulfilled in this anchoring - one is awareness of the object itself, a thought, a feeling, an image and so on. The other is the space in which the object projects itself - which is pervasive, pure consciousness.
Therefore every single moment of self-observation is an effort to rest in presence. With memory and will, the entire art of refining one’s meditation is reinforcing this shift from inattention to attention, over and over again, until “seeing” starts to unfold spontaneously, not unlike a lotus unfolding when it has been exposed to all of the necessary ingredients for life to flourish. Then one day you will no longer make an effort for seeing, but recognize yourself as seeing yourself.
B:
Well the effort is also an object or expression of that which needs no effort to know. I hear a bird chirp there's no effort in the hearing.
A:
You hear a bird chip and there is no effort in the hearing, yet effort is required for listening. Hearing is merely a mechanical process which leads to this particular mental projection we speak of as “hearing”, still whatever does not enter one’s perception is only a mechanical reaction. Likewise all sorts of mental projections are taking place, and one does not acknowledge, truly respond, to notice even half of them, unless perhaps one becomes a bit more skilled in the art of mindfulness.
As far as spiritual process, inner purification, and all matters related to wisdom - it is not enough for there to be merely the existence of awareness. Otherwise one could spend one’s entire life in a dream, without ever becoming conscious that one is in a dream - a sort of waking hypnosis in which one is under the spell of wrong knowledge, attachments, ego identifications, stories, narratives, the expressions of one’s shadow, etc.
Awareness is an impersonal intelligence which sees but cannot see itself. For self knowledge to take place - there must be perception. So much misunderstand has taken placed about these subjects because the proper investigation has not been done into the difference between perception and consciousness. Many things may exist in the field of one’s consciousness which one does not perceive, and therefore tends not to leave either a stronger impression on one’s memory, nor a sensitivity to the present which illuminates these mental projections as something immediately relevant to one’s experience.
Once one can begin to exercise self observation and attention, only then can one begin to approach one’s own mental projections with wisdom and understanding, and this in itself leads to training of the wisdom faculty.
Too often, because of a fixation on these one sided narratives of being “already enlightened”, the result is a very passive state of mind which amounts to laziness and an excuse to become irresponsible. This aside, it’s a one sided approach to what spiritual process is. Spiritual process isn’t mere involution; returning to the so called “source” or seeing one’s true nature. It is also a process of evolution - there are reactions and side effects to seeing oneself clearly. It is both involution and evolution together.
B:
Well said, practice is a continuous process, ever revealing. While it is possible for instant recognition like dzogchen and ch'an show we must do the work still to practice up to and beyond the recognition of anatta.
A:
Correct, for example even if let’s say it is more than a glimpse into one’s nature - let’s say the physical structure of the body has radically altered itself so that expansive samadhi becomes a default, baseline state.
Even then, wisdom may overshadow compassion; emotional traumas may remain unprocessed and therefore repressed in the shadow, heart and mind may be unbalanced, one may be too immersed in expansive samadhi and not grounded enough in the body, attachment to unquestioned beliefs, confirmation biases, etc
It does not take much to form a blind spot - only a single moment of inattention. So from the point of view of integration, anybody who truly beleives their inner work is “complete” is a fool, doesn’t matter what their degree of inner awareness is.

I think one of the most toxic illusions for the spiritual process is the belief, in one way or another, that there is a final destination. Of course it’s consoling for the ego to cling to some idea of a final destination; as though justifying all of one’s pains, struggles, and sufferings. This is distinct from having a self made purpose, a creative vision towards which one’s efforts are directed. That’s more being a creative force in the world - creating and destroying purpose as needed. Very different from a belief in the “final destination”

Well it's clear that you fundamentally misunderstood the concept of emptiness of inherent existence as the form a thing is currently taking.
Yes there are parts of the Bible that I find wisdom in but much of the real wisdom was excluded by the council of nicea when the Romans were deciding what to keep and what to get rid of.
Bieber one of the first times that it was revealed to me I had gotten in trouble for asking questions they couldn't answer at Sunday school. I had to copy the book of revelations and while I was writing it I was at the party where they were talking about all the 7's. Everything disappeared even my body, there was only light. Subject and object dissolved into pure witnessing. To me many years to find out what happened. So I find merit in the Bible. I like genesis too but ultimately I find the wisdom in the kjv lacking.

So Jesus is the phone in my hand that I write this on eh? The thought that I think, the couch that I sit on. All of this matter and energy that comprises the universe. Yet if I call him yeshua is that wrong? What if you say Jesus in another language is that wrong as well?
What I'm saying is that the word and idea that you have about reality is not reality itself. I can call a dog a cup but you could clearly see that it doesn't matter what you call it, it barks.

Sir the word emptiness just points to empty of inherent existence as the form it takes. All words appear as the expression of source, whatever you like to call it. Some people call it Brahman, some Allah, some God, and some Jesus. The word/ idea about it is not the thing in itself.

Another way to understand the idea "emptiness" is that of anything that comes and goes doesn't have inherent existence as the forms it takes. For example when I eat food that the nutrients in the food become part of my body. Previously they were part of a plant or animal, and before that they were somewhere else. The same goes for all life systems which are in constant state of change from one form to the next.

There is only one true enlightenment, and that is spiritual enlightenment. Anything else is embodied in the relative.
Spirituality necessitates not being in conflict with Spirit.
Spirit refers to the flow of all things (whether seen or not seen) ... from the Latin spiritus, the Indo-European root meaning "to breathe," the in-breath/Yang and out-breath/Yin of duality.
Terence McKenna mentioned, "The tension in the world is the tension between the Ego and the Feminine, not between the masculine and the feminine." Why? Because more than 99% of humanity believe that Feminine Energy arises from a gender of Form. Without understanding Feminine Energy, Spirituality is futile.
The truth is, that the Feminine of Duality is not a gender of Form, but the Wave of a Particle. Certainly, each gender of Form has a novel way of expressing or suppressing their Wave. Knowing this, great relationships don't take work. Comprehension trumps confidence.
Full spectrum awareness is an integrated yang-yin experience ... sphere and torus ... particle and wave ... not equality, but a rhythmic balanced interchange that pivots from beyond belief.
Spirit arises nearly instantaneous with the dream of duality, and is the energy dedicated to show the way back to Source ... which Spirit itself can never realize, because Spirit is not part of Source, but the dream of separation from Source.
Source does not 'breathe.' Source is neither the One Lever upon which duality effects its motion, nor duality. Source is as a Still Fulcrum.
All energy is in the past, as expressed by E=mc². At the so-called speed of light, the conditions of energy, mass, time, and space cease to exist. Einstein theorized that as we approach the so-called speed of light, time slows to zero, and space shrinks to nothing. There is no “now” in the electrodynamic dance of emptiness and form.
All Form and the Emptiness of Form are in the past. Duality, both emptiness and form, is slower than the presence of undivided light. Such a statement may baffle those rooted in object-ive, empirical logic; however, the principle is quite simple. The fact that matter is slowed-down divided light is actually widely known. When the conceptual speed of light is reached, space, time, matter, and energy (and thus the Breath of Spirit) cease. The nature of duality’s reality is that divided, projected light moves 186,281 miles per second slower than the stillness of Undivided Light. No matter what speed we perceive ourselves to be moving, the stillness of light appears to move by us 186,282 miles per second faster. From Undivided Light’s point of view, space, time, and energy are in the past, and the condition of that past can never enter the unconditionality of Undivided Light’s present.

From Undivided Light's point of view, it travels no distance in no time, and thus it has no need for speed. In fact, Undivided, Clear Light has not traveled a millimeter in all eternity.
Divided light on the other hand, is contained in what Buddha called the Six Realms of Cyclic Illusory Experience. That container is a box/cube known as 142857. Remember the film 'The Matrix?' The Architect is the One Lever that maintains the Six Realms of Samsara from the God Realm. Spirit is the Oracle, who permeates all Six Realms, and whose sole purpose is to expose and show how to get out of the Matrix. But again ... Spirit does not get out ... because Spirit is part of the System. The movement of Breath, that which comes and goes, can never enter Stillness.
Unfortunately (for the whole of Samsara), Spirit is mostly accessible in the third level of consciousness. Buddhists say that a human birth, which is the 3rd of the six realms, is the easiest realm in which to achieve liberation, and is therefore the most auspicious birth. Both Buddha and the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara suggested that liberation from Samsara is possible only in the human realm. They found that the Human Realm is the most suitable realm for practicing the dharma, because humans are not completely distracted by samsaric pleasure, like the God (6th) and Deva (5th) Realms.
Those seriously interested in flowing with Spirit without hesitation, thus un-obscuring the Gateway to Higher Human Potential and Awakening from the Dream ... must grasp Who's Who in Duality ... Yang and Yin ... Particle and Wave ... Form and the Empty of Form.
ONLY when emptiness is understood, can there be real compassion.
To the chagrin of Ego ... there is no Liberation without real compassion ... and no real compassion without grasping the Empty of Form. In other words, 99.99% of humanity is in deep sleep ignorance. Which is OK. But humanity as a whole need to realize that they are clueless ... they don't know ... and should cease advocating for things as if they did.
Buddhist teachings on compassion are grounded in the direct realization of emptiness; without which, compassion is impossible." HH Dalai Lama
"both the wisdom of emptiness (prajna) and compassion (karuna) are very important, like two wings of a bird; their integration is indispensable for inner awakening." Anam Thubten, Fragrance of Emptiness.

Perhaps ndas keep it quiet? I'm not sure, though. While i respect your point of view, i trust my direct experiencing. What I do know is that I was visited when I was little but the beings that visited me were what you might call extradimensional. Later in my studies of the dharma I recognized that these were the same as what we call sambogakaya or light body beings which are a projection of dharmakaya or unfabricated present awareness from which all phenomena arise.

The mind and senses are what is being experienced, aren't they? Like in the example the mind and senses are the coloring that appears in the glass but when you take the orange juice away the clarity is still there.

Basically what I'm saying is the same thing as when Jesus said "the son of man has nowhere to rest his head. " reality is appearing as thought, form, feeling, perception, and consciousness interpreted through the five senses. Yet there is no thought, form, perception, feeling, or consciousness that is not the expression of reality.
So relative truth can only be an appearance of absolute truth.
For example the thought "i am" is the expression of present awareness.
