Got an M4 Air today so I updated https://zeux.io/2025/03/31/measuring-acceleration-structures/ with data from Apple's Metal RT API.
Unfortunately I can't easily test RT performance without a full Metal conversion of my renderer which I don't really have time for atm :) this was just quickly hacking together code to build and compact BLAS using the same scene processing code.

Some file formats like OBJ and PPM are delightfully simple to write, which makes them great as a debugging tool since you can use an existing viewer, but if you decide to parse them the delight evaporates instantly.
(I guess that's generally true of many file formats? Some formats are painful to read *and* write though!)

@nprofile…gvnm Yeah the actual features seem fine. It looks like they overpromised for 6, as many projects got pushed back to 6.2, and “future” projects which I would worry is an euphemism for “unfunded/unstaffed”.
I think though Unity needs less of a new direction and more of a “let’s finish things we’ve started over the years and improve basic things that weren’t solid for too long”? Which, as a meta-direction, I could get behind!
(disclaimer: I used Unity for under a week total, could be way off)

@nprofile…gvnm @nprofile…t3wn I wrote an AVX512 version of meshopt decoder in November 2019 (!!!). It was tested on Ice Lake. That's also the last CPU it worked on... all the way until Zen 4, where the code just worked and was fast. It's funny that 5.5 years later I still can't run it on a new client Intel CPU :)

Featuring vertex codec v1 (increased compression ratio, faster decompression), even faster decompression on Apple Silicon, improvements to meshlet builder with fewer disconnected clusters and more options for clustered raytracing and hierarchical clusterization, new algorithms for hierarchical clusterization, simplification quality improvements and more.

@nprofile…gvnm Some thoughts because I had a similar feeling a month or two ago but things are looking up:
- It really helps to stop thinking about things that do not depend on you at all. I stopped using Twitter, and aggressively unfollow people on Mastodon/Bsky who share politics.
- It really helps to take any things that you actually have power to change and are depressed about, and try and fix them.
- You don't owe the world any tech; just focus on whatever is fun for you, impact be damned.

This started a while back and while there was a glimpse of hope post install fee drama, maybe “how to use ai to improve your ads” is actually the dominant direction.
