Something happened yesterday that made me wonder. What if the western elites decided long ago that the way to gain total control over the population was to first let China push the envelope on surveillance and control. Paint them as the bad guys, make us think that the average Chinese person lives like a timid victim of Big Brother, when it's nothing of the sort. But paint that picture.
Meanwhile the west are playing the classic moral high ground game of accusing your adversary of exactly what you do behind the scenes!
IE the unthinkable is rolling out before our eyes and instead of the opportunity to make America great by focusing on liberty and freedom, they and the rest of the g7 are actually going to out big brother the Chinese and their Brix buddies as they position themselves in a fast evolving multi polar world.
That's the thesis for my next novel.

What is the most barebones Nostr app you can think of, so that when I send a newbie to sign up, they don't think "Nostr is ..."
By that I mean, the focus is so much on social media. Newbies finding Nostr via Twitter or on youtube etc are almost pre-programmed to think "Nostr is social media", which is not the reality, it's a whole fricking internet in the making.
So I want my (go to iris.to) instructions to be:
- Go to "nostr-no-name" (little clue what Nostr is)
Add a nym
Press Go!
Settings > Keys - Copy the key pair into a password manager
- Open browser settings
Search for getalby
Install
Add key pair.

Instead of Zen Desk or Whatsapp, or similar, I have embedded this Nostr chat as an iframe in a trial Ghost website.
It asks to sign in with extension, messages go through to my DM box on Nostr, so it works on that level.
It did have an impact on my own Nostr bio as explained earlier.
Where are we at with the integrity of DMs? Are the privacy buffs rolling their eyes and I should be embedding Simplex or are my DMs OK with help requests from anons?

Colonialism alive and well.
A couple of other words I've come across for "foreigner" . Excuse the spelling, khawaja. The white skinned people said it means white man, but the uncomfortable truth is it actually means rich man, So some locals were known too as khawaja, and then you realise it isnt perhaps a positive word!, even though, delivered with no malice.
Here white ex pat immigrants, covering my bases there! are referred to as guiris. I've still not worked out what it really means because although it's never said with malice, they say it is tourist, but after 20 years Im still a guiri!?
In SW UK the tourists are called grokles and that was not a positive word.
Who knows in this desemanticised touchy age, does anyone know what they are even saying any more :)

What's your view on Goat and sheep's cheese? My understanding is they digest and produce milk/cheese that is far healthier than cow-based dairy, especially when they are wandering the hills not the feedlots.
Its obviously a loaded question!!! I cant eat meat, literally makes me puke, and I am big into goat cheese and eggs in my veggie diet.
As a good friend said, we don't want to get into a mindset where all food is deemed poison By the same token, maybe we miss the memo sometimes.

Our industrial food society has a knack for over-egging at one extreme, or squeezing the joy and poetry out of tradition at the other
First pressing of freshly harvested olives, or Extra Virgin Olive Oil ad ee now call it, is one example.
EVOO which started life known sinply as Olive Oil was once pressed at room temperature using stones and maybe water or donkey power. Now we call that "Extra Virgin olive Oil", because with progress, what producers now call "olive oil" is the lesser grade second pressing.
But it's worse than that. Cold pressed Extra Virgin olive oil can be pressed at up to 60C " room temperature".
So how to differentiate the purest form of oil from the one reinventing the boundaries of purity? I guess we are down to marketing and pretty pictures.
Except plain and simple olive oil the old way, liquid gold, super nutritious oil with as many taste subtleties as a fine wine, s now called EVOO in certain circles. In Spanish that is AOVE, celebrated by top chefs, lauding oil done the proper way as something special.
So now the purest oil is hidden behind the equivalent of WC , desemanticised.
The EVOO in supermarkets is for sure not cold pressed from this year and likely is pressed at the legally stipulated 60c max for "cold" and is 2- 3 years in a stainless tank waiting for the right price
And that known as "olive oil" in supermarkets, who knows what it is. For sure it is second pressing and has been cut with sunflower oil or whatever is going cheap. Is it a better bet than than straight rocket fuel seed oil? I'd hope so, but olive oil as our not so distant ancestors knew? Not a chance.
So that's what little producer people like me are up against. Extra Virgin Olive Oil should not be hidden behind acronyms, not sidelined by mass produced lesser grade versions, and must prevail for international health reasons, for cultural and societal reasons, and for environmental reasons.
Small scale producers can't make ends meet without perverse incentive subsidies. That's why developing a mobile chicken farm amongst the olives is so important to me. To prove that there is a way to generate regular cash flow from an "unprofitable" olive grove, while negating the need for subsidies which require farmers to plough up the land and make it look tidy.
Some things shouldn't be condensed, rushed, commoditized out of existence.
Something like that :)

Fighting for freedom of speech is nothing to do with anarchy or being anti law for the sake of it. Infringing on a society's freedom of speech puts a brake on society's ability to develop. The dumbest thing a greedy leader could ever do is stop the people talking freely. That kind of policy is literally eating their own, and everyone else's lunch.

On an individual level, what protects activists from being doxxed if a relay can see the IP address of users? New nsec for every post. A VPN and an onion relay as standard for using Nostr truly anon?

have you tried habla.news? Thats for posting long form stuff. The thing is though, what you post there is published to Nostr, so it appears in your social media feed. My takeaway is that unless Habla News can attract readers, or they have a smart collation tool so visitors can easily find all your posts, ie unless I am missing some obvious advantage, (and I stand to be corrected) you might as well post long form articles to your social media client which is the space where they seem to be developing every conceivable improvement to search, collation and discoverability.

Sods Law. I normally don't have much joy with growing onions because I'm stingy with water. They stay scallion size! This year I watered a bit more and lo and behold I have about 200 onions like this in various stages of growth around the place. No surprises there, they say.

But would you believe it, I seem to have developed some sort of intolerance for what has been a staple of my diet for decades. Giving them away now.
Meanwhile back in the Spring I wanted to focus on peppers instead of tomatoes, they are much more nutritious. But despite going overboard planting dozens of different sorts of seeds, this year, what normally grows like a weed has faded away or finally started to kick off towards the end of the hot season.

Morning all. Out of curiosity I have scrolled down a YouTube feed of economic forecasting and commentary. I can see every reason to feel quite doomy, especially as the content sliwly meanders from econonics to pomutics to war and ...
If you want to hurt somebody, words can be more violent than physical force.
But if you see words as a bunch of letters arranged in a certain order, words can't hurt you.
And if you know about Bitcoin and about the Nostr community, a YouTube doom scroll can't hurt you.
Taking it further, if you try look past the words of someone trying to hurt you, or look behind the motives of a YouTube, you might see a weak, or scared messenger.
And if you are drinking from a positive peaceful well, it is easy to simply shrug and smile and acknowledge you have heard their words, or taken time to look through the doom scroll, but it's not something you are going to worry about. You march to a different beat, have a good day.

Lashings of rain which is good, for second consecutive day. On the other side of the equation, not getting out much. We live outside except for the 60 days a year when there isn't sun here, so Im feeling a bit deskbound recently!
My barebones solar installation is very fast at charging, but is struggling under the stress of coping with me being indoors. But at least there is still juice to type this and listen to a podcast. :)

To answer your question about the percentage of people who are poor in terms of access to internet and devices. Lots!
This is the percentage of population by country who use the internet. I read that as the % of people who can afford a device and the fee to get online. https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IT.NET.USER.ZS?locations=A9
Globally about half of homes have a PC. Phones are the main access point online now, though, but the developing world doesn't have 82% smartphone use like in the US or Europe. https://www.statista.com/statistics/539395/smartphone-penetration-worldwide-by-country/
Obviously Nostr devs aren't responsible for whether people can afford to have an internet connection, but some apps are clearly caught up in the built-in obsolesence trend. What are considered "throwaway PCs and devices" that could be affordable to millions of people, won't run browsers that are required to access a cross section of Nostr apps.
If a guy can write software to pay for groceries in Africa with bitcoin on a dumb phone, it can't be beyond the wit of a community that wants to be global, to make sure its apps and clients are visible on old browsers.

Laying poison is a bad move. You can end up poisoning all sorts, especially the cat that's supposed to be catching the mouse, which as @wedge social points out, a cat is far from the dead cert killer we are all led to believe as kids! I have spotted mice before my cat.
We are the apex predator but we can be kind about infestations. Don't give pests a reason to move in. The place I live now was wasp infested, rat infested and ant heaven when I moved in. I haven't killed one and they have pretty much all gone.
For mice, block up gaps from outside. That tip about steel wool is a good one, or rolled up hardware cloth around entry points for pipes. They hate the smell of mint. I have a big bunch hanging up.
Don't leave food lying around.
I view cats as a deterrent, not a last line of defence. Have them for patrolling, putting rodents off settling down. And a dog patrolling too. We have a big hound it is a killer and the rats know it, another reason for them to keep out the way! A 35kg dog is no good for attic duty though :)
Last resort is humane traps to get them out and dropped off in a new locale. The thing is, we are the pest when we set up shop in a house in a field or equivalent. We can do better than just kill everything.

Now I can see all the Nostr clients in their entirety. Shout out to #anonostr and #satellite and #Nostrchat the clients I found that worked just fine on an old desktop browser. I am sure there are a lot more.
But a friendly word for #Iris and this very #Nostter client from which I typeth. I was excluded from your Nostr experience until I was able to upgrade.
You might say, get with the program, old fella, catch up. Fair enough, but maybe listen to the perspective of a younger man who knows his shit - Obi at Fedimint. His epiphany on developing a truly global entity: you have to think of the poor people first, not the ones with the disposable income to throw their cash at solutions.
There are many more billions of poor than comfortably off. It is likely the former who will most need the opportunities that the Nostr protocol offers. Just saying. It's marketing 101, know your market.
Now, I have a couple of years to work out how to get Linux Puppy working. I go it installed and booting up through the BIOS, but now its stuck and Linux forums are enough to make Einstein scratch his skull.

Been a very unproductive day between relays, and bootable Linux drives not playing fair.
No doubt it is me and not having the latest greatest kit and 2 left thumbs.
On the positive side of this learning opportunity, the takeaway is:
I'm only interested in tools that make me productive. I'm willing to learn, but that's not the same as being a crash test dummy. There's more of me than techies who love to tinker, or if there aren't, Nostr is going nowhere. Or the same place as Linux which is still not in the average Joe's lexicon.
I used to run a big how to website so I'm not just having a pop after a bad day on Nostr. Very often we fell short of providing the clearest info, because of too many assumptions.
Instructions need to be idiot proof.
The word "just" needs to be struck from technical step by steps.
For newbies, explanations need to come AFTER we have followed every step and achieved something technically challenging.
Under promise and over deliver.
.I think the client owners need to step up and have a pinned welcome message with resources to get newbies started. It isn't right to be attracted by censorship resistance, sovereignty over content etc, when it is still a dark art to achieve that. Back to the crash test dummy, learning curve, tinker balance. But Even Twitter had a button to press exports.
Nostr users are very helpful but I am fast running out of #asknostr tokens :)

Finally have citrine relay app working on my phone without errors showing on 10/10 relays listed on Amethyst.
In citrine settings though, if I input my npub in "Accept events signed by..." a relay goes down. Remove and the relay goes back up. (Not that I can tell which relay is going down!)
The version choice on the #citrine github page. As that is all there is to go on, a lot of assumptions are being made about what a noobie would choose.

The nofollow link is a signal for sure. It's like not putting bricks in the foundation.
I can remember finding out a colleague was going through old blogs nofollowing links to the website generating work for him - the excuse being, so Google didn't think he was showing too much love to one site. It was nonsense. He was setting up a competing site and wanted the "Google love" to stop with him" .

#asknostr what I am supposed to see on the working localhost:4869 page for the #citrine relay I installed on my Android phone?
After much node.js-ing, I have now got as far as Terminal confirming everything is talking and reading correctly, but progress is stalled at a message on Chrome saying it sees a Nostr relay or websocket. But that's it.
What am I missing? Or is that the feedback? #relay

This year was the biggest olive harvest in living memory, and the almonds are bowing under the weight too.
Not a drop of irrigation, the almonds are not an ecological disaster when left to their own devices. However the price to pay is less yield per tree. The olive's alternate fruiting cycle means this year is near zero harvest for us.
And it is the drive for consistent yield and price that motivates the questionable practices of the mega farms who have driven their input costs up and the prices down en route to becoming mega farms. It is a ludicrous system of misaligned incentives that the consumer, the farmer and nature pays a heavy price for. Or we could just eat a little less and leave much of the almond industry to nature and find more purpose in the orchards beyond monoculture almonds.

Up all night learning node.js or more accurately, hamming my way through the basics so I can see whats going on with the nostr relay running on my phone. Thanks for that initial nudge. Or rather thanks to you I haven't had much sleep haha.

But the Kiwi browser on the phone times out. The Firefox for Mac browser says Upgrade Required. Safari not playing either. I turned the relay on and off in case that is part of the process.
What are the URL options? Is it ws://localhost:4869 in the address bar, or am I missing something obvious?
I don't have WiFi, but the phone's connected by Bluetooth to the computer and that has an IP address showing in preferences. And they must be paired judging by Terminal message.
Someone online said it was the browsers not recognising websockets. But Kiwi is Chrome based, no?
AI hasn't helped, #asknostr is my last hope :)

Apologies if this is a dim question but what are the data implications of this option IE my computer relies on phone data to be online. Does this relay only run when I am using Nostr, or is it going to be consuming while I'm online, but not using Nostr? Cheers

Gotta say, the GitHub advisory was a bit superior syndrome-y. It's hard enough finding our way through Nostr without having to work out GitHub too. PR, what's that even mean? Don't tell me, just illustrating your bade level isn't mine.
Anyway, Nostr is only going to work if Devs with coding skills have the wisdom to listen to the needs or ideas of non techy vast majority end users who ultimately are the signal for how worthwhile all the technical work has been.
I remember betamax being crushed by inferior but better marketed VHS, don't want a repeat of that happening here. Cheers

I would have rather not had a preloaded list of the popular talking heads, or perhaps a B-lister list, users have a small following that has arisen from zero. I guess the discovery tools are a work in progress.
Going even further, instead of lists of users, I could have done with a super concise welcoming video with the transcript of how to get going in Nostr. Each client would have agency over what user guide they push to newbies, another differentiator.
Or how about two-for-one, the A-lister in the preloaded follow list earns their bacon and they do the welcome to Nostr presentations! :)
My first impression of Fountain was that some prominent users were nicely set up ready for the launch,. Meanwhile, I know I'm not the only Nosr user fumbling around trying to get Fountain to work like a Nostr client should.

My 2cents, I think @Karnage is on right track. I am always reading fantastic gems from npubs with no following, and they generate no reactions. And those with big following not saying anything different and getting loads of love and sats. Thats an X style influencer influence on Nostr. Of course the big hitters here have a lot to say and bring it on, but overall it should be a meritocracy, and its not oie in the sky idealism, because we do actually get to choose who we follow, we do have the agency to seek out the quiet corners, else this magic protocol is going down another road to echo chambers.

Absolutely. I studied economics at school and university and never understood how any of it related to my world. Turns out there was nothing to understand in their teachings It was mostly a bit of truth sprinkled into a pot of invented theoretical nonsense, to create an aura of superiority around the economists. End result, we normies think it is best to just leave it to them clever bastards who read the Financial Times, to run things.
In other words the dumb thing about me was me giving those teachers my time to sit through their drivel. I'm sure I'm not the only one that Bitcoin has awoken though, and literally screw all Keynsian economics teachers! They are propagandist, useful idiots.

Obi is dropping so many truth bombs.
It's huge recognising that for most of the world, handing over a 10$ bill for coffee and not being too concerned about the change, is not an option. Poverty is all- consuming.
Maybe Bitcoin development has been the preserve of the wealthy, so far, but its use as a medium of exchange in tandem with general freedom tech is going to be driven by the poorer of the world.
And the beauty is that the rich are incentivised to put their bitcoin to work to release so much human potential while keeping their bitcoin intact.
It is exhausting watching every penny. It is such a waste of human capital when so many don't have savings or access to funds because it has been rigged that relatively few can create enough wealth from their toils.
Something like that, anyway.

The nitpicking was prompted by a Nostrasia interview with Stewart Mackenzie. Apologies if I get the lingo wrapped around my neck, but I think he said that unless you can show him that the path is from private key to private key, don't even think about calling the network censorship resistant. And he was very critical about IP addresses too. Probably best to listen to him! His benchmark is a state attack, rather than keeping out Johnny Rotten Hacker. Not a bad height to set for a bar, though!

In 2020 I moved on from a line of work I had been in for 30 years. I never think about that job consciously, but now and again I have horrendous nightmares, where a job goes horribly wrong, like so badly wrong it is unreal. Apparently that isn't uncommon when people retire. I'm not even retired though.

Looking at Nostr.build for speeding up image use when posting on Nostr. On my first effort, the first thing I notice is the metadata left after it has been stripped out. Fair enough #Nostr.build for thinking of that.
Bu here we go, another privacy lightbulb flashing!! Why do they offer that service?
To save any snoops the trouble, hopefully all you can glean with your exif search tools is that this photo was taken a while ago and was sent from an image app on an Apple device to Nostr.build! Otherwise, you could probably have discovered hundreds of bits of data down to the location, altitude, and god knows what else.

Over the years I have seen many new roads in rural areas run alongside varying degrees of remains of original tracks. The minor roads aren't necessarily defunct. Travelling through France or Spain, unless you are loaded or in a hurry, secondary roads are very useful

Google say they can scan emails for "security purposes".
So, screw Google every which way. Much easier to delete the whole empire from your digital life than play their game of whackamole trying to find the right combination of settings to be shielded from their invasions of privacy. And if there is such a combination, you can bet they will move the goalposts to make sure they still have a way in.

Talk about slowly, slowly suddenly. Yesterday #Proton released encrypted notes/doc sharing, which is a huge deal to get off of Evernote and any OS notes apps that auto sync to snoop doggy dog Googles or Apples.
Today Proton have their bitcoin wallet up and running. Shame I can't see a Lightning option to go with their one-click email sending option, but I am sure that will come.
And now #Fountain App have just filled my inbox with glorious news that they are now a Nostr client.
This is visionary times.

Before finding Bitcoin, I didn't know enough to hate fiat but since entering the workplace in 1981, I knew in my bones there was something very wrong with the fundamentals.
Who knew, 1981 was the year the US debt first hit one trillion bucks. Since then, the cause of my fundamental angst about "what the hell sort of wierd game are we all playing?" has just rolled on and on gathering more debt and more reasons to not participate.
