I have spent several weeks trying to replace the Blink API wrapper of npub.cash with a Cashu native alternative and its been a wild ride.
While Cashu mints do support WebSockets for realtime updates, it turned out that WebSockets are pretty difficult to work with, when you are trying to keep them and the subscriptions alive for long periods (in my case days).
But there is a second issue: You see Cashu mints enfore rather strict rate limits on their users. This is important as Cashu is account-less and preventing spam attacks is difficult. Usually this is no issue, as regular users interacting with a mint do not hit these limits. But npub.cash is a funnel. Instead of every user using their own IP to hit the mint, with npub.cash every user "proxies" through the services server.
Turns out this second issue is much bigger than the first one and WebSockets do not solve this. So I decided to build a scheduler that make sure that all mint communication happens as frequent as possible, but never to frequent. This module also solves the first issue, as it allows to queue polling tasks in a lower priority making sure the service stays up to date about payment activity.
If the server restarts it wont hit the mint with a gazillion subs at once, it will make sure they are evenly spread out through low priority calls, while always making sure there is "rate" left for calls that need to be instant.
I built this module externally, so theoretically I could publish it as npm package for structured and timed mint communication. Please let me know if you could use something like this (because as of right now I don't think most Cashu applications would benefit from this, npub.cash is not your usual Cashu application).
After doing some testing I think it is ready to put into an experimental version of npub.cash. I hope to release this on reckless-npub.cash by the end of the week.

This is not the point. Adding OTP enables apps that do not have access to your private key to still implement npub.cash's API.
Imagine you want to use cashu.me with npub.cash, but you don't have a signing extension. Instead of pasting your private key in there you could simply:
1. Add you public key to cashu.me
2. Go to your daily driver nostr app
3. Retrieve the OTP and paste it into cashu.me
4. Cashu.me is now authenticated with npub.cash without ever signing anything, nor accessing the keys

No, the problem with NIP-07, NIP-46 and NIP-42 is that all of them require signatures. Requiring a signature comes with the burden of key-management. Either your app accesses keys directly (unsafe) or you use a signer / extension (friction).
With this using npub.cash becomes as easy as operating a single nostr client. No additional software required.
NIP-46 and NIP-07 logins are still possible. OTP is not mandatory, but complimentary

1) Yea, liquidity is an issue. This approach lets the user choose between liquidity and ease of user. Timeframes can be adjusted to balance things out.
2) As long as the timelock has not yet expired, the funds can only be swept by the payer. As soon as it does, both parties can claim them (no exclusivity). Funds become unrecoverable if both parties loose their keys

One of my primary goals for the next iteration of npub.cash is to make authorization simpler, while keeping a high level of security.
The new version no longer relies on NIP-98 alone but on a mix of NIP-98 and JWTs. Most of the protected endpoints can be accessed by providing a valid auth token. This token can be obtained by providing a valid NIP-98 event ONCE. At the same time, all endpoints still accept valid NIP-98 headers instead of the JWT (this is great for apps that have full access to nsecs).
By default withdrawing is not possible using a JWT. However, users can opt-in to withdrawals using JWTs by signaling this when acquiring their auth token using NIP-98.
This keeps things secure, while at the same time reducing NIP-07 friction a lot. Reduced NIP-07 friction equals higher security as it makes sure users are not bullied into insecure default settings for their signers.
Finally, this opens up the possibility of OTP logins via nostr DMs. Instead of obtaining a JWT using NIP-98, users can get one by providing an OTP that the service sends via a secure nostr DM. I am still figuring out the best defaults for this, but I think the best way would be to require a second OTP on withdrawals.

The latest RC of cashu-ts introduces the concept of Factories. A Factory is a function that lets developers take control over how Cashu outputs will be generated by cashu-ts.
Consumers can also define a "default" factory that is going to be used for all outputs that are considered "keep" outputs (mints + melt / swap change). This paves the way for much easier state management and WAY less code.
In this very simplistic example I show how a simple closure can be used to make sure that all the proofs generated are derived from a seed phrase, while outsourcing the counter management to the factory

📣 Looking for the bravest of the brave
We have just released a new RC of cashu-ts v2.2. This is an experimental canary release, including the output of our revamped build pipeline and the new OutputData / Factory patterns.
While the API is non-breaking, these changes are considered experimental and require some field testing. Therefore, we would highly appreciate any brave testers who would go ahead and take the RC for a test ride. What would be most interesting is whether the new build output can be plugged into existing projects without breaking anything.

I was finally able to finish the first end-to-end test using the new output logic inside cashu-ts!!
In this pretty extensive test you can see the new factory approach. You will be able to provide a default factory function that is now applied to all the outputs that will be kept.

A soon to be released version will not only enable users to get full control over the outputs generated by a method, it also introduces the concept of "Output Factories" 🏭 🥜
An output factory describes how the library should generate outputs. The best part is, that users can now control the kind of output they want to receive, but still let the library handle splitting, amounts and fees. With a factory you will be able to instantiate a CashuWallet class that will make sure all change outputs that might be created by calling "send" or "mintProofs", will automatically be created using the factory you specified (e.g. locked to you pubkey).
