I started it years ago, then abandoned it for years. I finally picked it back up last year and started rewriting it from the ground up. It had been a drudgery and a slog, and I hated it.
Then, I started looking into sword and sorcery - its structure, its tropes, its style. I wrote the final act of the novella in two days with the prospect in mind of writing that last segment as a S&S story. The deed is done, and my confidence is through the roof.
Please keep my practice of this craft in your prayers.

I was in a Payless one time, and there was a television on a low shelf in the back corner. I guess it was for kids to watch TV while their parents shopped for cheap shoes. @nprofile…przs @nprofile…029t it's very important to understand something I learned recently: the idea that art is _primarily_ an avenue for mere emotional expression is a very recent one. It's almost as dangerous as shock value, because it encourages dismissal of a work of art if it is viewed merely sentimentally.
As Tolkien says, art is sub-creation. As Horace says, it must be sweet and useful, dulce et utile: it must both edify its audience AND be pleasing to the senses. If all an artist does is emote, he turns into a drama queen and a coxcomb.
What turned me on to this idea is an analysis of the late Medieval and early Renaissance sonnet sequences of Petrarch, Spenser, and Shakespeare. At first glance, these poetic series seem like centuries-old Hallmark cards written for the sake of making a quick buck from a noble sponsor. However, the structure of each and the numbering of the sonnets is vital to understanding the individual poems in the context of the whole: each sequence is built to match cues in a myth or dates in the liturgical calendar. The structure of the poems individually and collectively is highly complex and provides a work as demonstrative of microcosm and macrocosm as the works of a Raphael or a Da Vinci where the mathematical structure of God's created order was a paradigm (if not THE paradigm) for mapping the artist's pen or brush and guiding the reader's eye.

There are some more generic paradigms which can be used in story structure. Outlining has helped me and provides a mile high view of a story I write. Zooming into each major plot point is like adjusting lenses on a telescope or something. Writing by the seat of one's pants is fun, but only works practically on a very ground level perspective.
@nprofile…hk5e, here are a few tips I've gleaned over the years:
CHARACTERS:
- This is a bit arguable, but unless you're writing wisdom literature, hard sci-fi, or something like the Decameron or the Arabian Nights, characters are going to make or break your story
- While there are many "interview your character" sketch templates online, the one I have found the most useful is this one: https://files.catbox.moe/v1cbw2 .
- Usually you will want to pick two to four centrsal characters (even for longer/novel length works) and throw them into some-kind-of-situation together wherein they will have to interact in depth; that "some-kind-of-situation" will be the plot of your story
PLOT:
- Outlines are your friend, despite what pantsers say
- The most important element of the plot is the satisfaction or denial of a desire of your main protagonist; arguably, the core plotline of any story is "someone wants something"; what your characters want can be gleaned from the sketch in the link above
- You want to get your characters from one plot point to the next, and this can be done in a variety of ways; however, the most interesting ways usually involve making things as difficult as possible for your characters. Do not shy away from being cruel to them; make them work for what they want. Yes, this will mean more work for you as the author, but that's what writing is: a craft which requires hard work. Depending on your genre, this may require some world-building.
