I believe in a world of cooperation rather than competition. One of my current personal projects in life is to lessen my dependence on for-profit companies, and rather join non-profits and coops. I consider the world of free software and free culture an important part of this more cooperative world I long for.

i'm thinking about feature discovery in fedi.I found this (smoll) thread on socialhub https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/service-capability-discovery/630
There's basically either using nodeinfo, which i don't like cause it's not very AP. Or adding keys to the actor, which i consider more proper AP-wise.
It seems litepub even defines a "capabilities" key already, see e.g. https://ilja.space/schemas/litepub-0.1.jsonld I didn't know that!
It's not very used now I think, but could become quite extended if we actually start to use this. It seems it's a normal json object. This means the capabilities are always send with the actor completely (i.e. not referenced with an id so you only have to fetch the whole thing when needed), but I guess that's ok bc most of the times you will only reference the actor by id anyhow, so the times you fetch it, you probably want to fetch the capabilities as well?
Smithereen seems to use this capabilities key, I'm unsure about other software. I'm not seeing it as a fep, but could maybe be good to define it better?

@nprofile…m3qg paypal once locked my account without warning, still had €80 on it. and when they finally unlocked it, i was unable to get the money to my own bank account, so i just donated it all to some project so its at least put to good use. stripe at least notified me beforehand. problem is that i fear that whatever such service will always have such problems. for eu it would be nice if you could say "pay to this sepa account", but maybe there's a fiscal/legal reason why they don't do that and use a payment processor inbetween, idk.

i really like liberapay for donations btw. it's annoying on the receiving side that you require paypall or stripe, both which i've had problems with and now refuse to use. but for the donating side, it's really good imo. clear and simply interface, and once the bank mandate is in order, it all works super easy.

@nprofile…h6f2 idk. we all grow up and live in the world we do. that world changes over time. So I do believe the historical perspective is interesting, and even useful, to see what incentive our social/political system had that brought certain consequences. but i don't think it makes sense to blame an entire group of people purely based on the fact that they just happened to have born in a specific period.
the difference is basically between "boomers were the problem" vs "due to X and Y, society changed which led to things like A and B happening, which were the foundations of current problems L and M". In the former you blame a group of people and that's it. the second allows us to learn from history.

@nprofile…h6f2 hot take maybe, but i don't think generational hate makes much sense tbh. like, how are boomers in general the problem when only one of my grand parents had a car, lots of the food they got was local or even home grown, and the furthest they went on vacation was to the sea by bicycle. humans are humans in every generation, some will care about others and some will be selfish.

@npub1qh0…xeda One thing i noticed is that somewhere in my 30's i didn't see people older than me as "older". As a kid, someone even a couple years older, seems very different. They are "older" (different, maybe wiser, cooler, etc.). In my 20's, I could get along with people 10 years older than me, but there was always this deviding line between "them" and the people of my own age. I don't know when exactly, but somewhere that changed.

there's a plugin in Falkon called greacemonkey and it's pretty awesome! I assume it also exists on other browsers, and I'm pretty sure I've seen people talk about this, but this is the first time I see it.
Basically it allows you to inject javascript files into web pages, allowing all sorts of fun things :hehe:

my current take on TDD is that everybody tests when developing.
you write a piece of code, run it to see what it does, then build further.
each time you run the code to see what it does, is testing.
and afterwards, you'll probably try some other stuff to see if you didn't break anything. this is again testing.
the only difference is whether or when you automate this otherwise manual action. but i hardly find that a fundamental difference.

Because if OpenSSL can be such a problem, I assume distros make sure they have the newest version any how, so it wouldn't create the compatibility issues we see now. Or am I seeing things too simplistic?

is there any one smart enough to file an issue somewhere to get the Elixir release builds be static builds? So we don't need all these flavours any more and people can just drop the binary on w/e distro they have as long as the cpu architecture is good. (As I understand, that should be possible with static builds, right?)
I guess having dynamic builds makes sense for corporations who control their infra, but for floss projects, that just seems like a bother in a lot of cases...
I'm not smart enough. I don't know where to ask, how to ask, and if they want more information, I'll probably not even understand the question :/

a hack i've been thinking of i also want to try someday.
When your instance goes down, you get annoying 500 errors, right. But what if you can set a retry in the http proxy and tell it to retry for several seconds. You could basically restart while it looks like you still have uptime, hehe (just bigger latency).
And a quick glance tells me something like that may be possible in Caddy by using the load balancers lb_try_duration and lb_try_interval. And yes, this is load balancing settings, but who's to say you can't have a load balancing setup with only one node :blobfoxcomfysmirk:

The instance has a sane blocking policy, allowing broad federation, and it's admin is someone who's known to put a lot of effort in keeping the instance run well for the people who use it.

With this whole bluesky thing, I once again see the take of how bad fedi-ux, no, ux in floss in general, is.
But you know what? Maybe instead of complaining, it's time people learn to look for solutions themselves. I feel like the blame is being put on the devs and projects who are actually doing work; "They" aren't doing their work good enough.
But you know what? These projects and these devs actually bring something not bad into the world. You're comparing a project backed by a billionaire with a project hacked together by a couple of people who, just like you probably, are just wage slaves trying to have something better in what little free time they have.
We don't have a billion, or even a million, dollar to pay people to focus on developing this. We don't have "the right" people to put on specific tasks. The only people we have, is the people who are willing to put what little time and energy they have into this.
And you know what? You too can probably do something. This is a capitalist world and we're all victims of it. You don't need to be a developer. You want better ux? Fine. Find yourself a ux-er willing to put in the work. Find yourself a project willing to work together on this. And find yourself the money to pay people so they actually have the time to work on this stuff you think is so important.
I've worked on pleroma and now i work on akkoma. In both cases i can tell you that people are mostly trying to not let things fall apart completely. There's a big burden crushing our shoulders because we have a sense of responsibility towards the world. We're already doing all this. Why are we expected to not only be devs, but also analysts, engineers, architects, community managers, support, doc writers, and more?
I think it's good that people identify problems, but please, try to also think of solutions. We can't all bear this alone.
