That begs the question, what is nostr, and what problems does it solve, and what problems does it create?
Those two questions should always be kept in mind for any new idea.
There’s absolutely no reason RSS files (you know, the other stuff) couldn’t be shared across relays. This solves one problem of podcasting, which is a lack of redundant distribution.
The other problem is a centralized directory. If nostr has a solution to decentralize searching for every podcast about “greek mythology” amongst 4 million podcasts, that’s another problem of podcasting that could be solved.

You can't.
PC2.0 has value splits, nostr has weak implementation of that, and mostly unsupported in most nostr apps.
Wavlake gets around this by giving you a single address that all the boosts(PC2.0) and zaps(nostr) go to. Wavlake handles the splits for you. Basically, you register your splits in the wavlake app, a listener sends sats to the Wavlake wallet, when whatever criteria Wavlake has to redistribute the sats is met, then they send out the sats to the splits you registered with them. It's the only way to do splits on nostr right now.
PC2.0 handles splits differently. All of the splits are in your feed, when a listener boosts, there's no middle man, the sats go straight from the listener to the split. It depends on what your goals are.
If you don't care about Wavlake acting as a middle man and taking a 10% cut, then just post everything on Wavlake. All the stuff in Wavlake shows up in the PC2.0 apps and allows nostr zaps.
If you don't care about splits and each band has a single wallet, then either use an PC2.0 host or Wavlake and use that single wallet, boosts and zaps both work fine for a single wallet.
If you don't want a middle man with a 10% cut, and you want splits, then you can't get zapped, and any promo you do on nostr will have to send a person to a PC2.0 that handles the splits.
Those are basically your three options.

Hive was used because the guy who built is a huge Hive enthusiast, built it out, and proved its usefulness. And it has been proven to be quite useful. If someone built a better solution on nostr that proved to be as reliable, I don’t see any reason for it not to work on both nostr and Hive. The podping api could simply notify both networks of the updated podcasts. One thing about the PC2.0 community is they’re very pragmatic but busy, so the builders decide the direction of things much more than the idea makers.

Now, I don't think there's a way around preventing piracy, that is someone from taking your feed, changing the value block and npub to their own, and signing it and posting it on their server.
There's never been a way to prevent that, and I'm not sure signatures can, any more than they can stop either of us from signing a note that says "I rock" and claiming to be the original author. But signatures can definitely help with the problem of redundancy and ensuring the feed hasn't been tampered with.

My idea is the .xml file is read it as a simple string. The host or feed builder would minify the string using a standardized function (this helps to remove extra spaces, new lines, etc that would create a different hash), then hashes it, signs the hash, then add that signature to the xml file.
Adding the signature to the file of course breaks the hash.
So to verify, an app would first remove the signature from the xml file, then minify the string using the same function the host did, then hash then hash it. The string should match the string that was originally hashed because the signature was removed first, and the hashes should match.
And yes, there would have a specific tag to add and remove to ensure nothing extra was added, but as long as everyone was using the same inserting and removal functions, that 'should' guarantee consistency across multiple apps and hosts.
The other would be a function that every app and host uses that parses the xml to a json file, remove the signature tag from the json file, then hash the JSON.stringified object, sign that hash, add it back to the JSON signature tag, then convert back to xml. As long as there's a consistent way to remove the signature before hashing, I think it would work.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I've built a thing or two, and I'm no dummy, yet I find nostr is not quite as simple to build on as it's made out to be. Sending stuff on relays is easy enough, but an ever growing list of NIPs, the potential for tens of thousands kinds, single letter tags, encoding, decoding, different ids, it definitely gets complicated quickly, and it's hard to keep track of what the consensus for doing anything is. Perhaps there isn't a consensus yet, and that's part of the pain I'm feeling.

One of the biggest problems I have with nostr, is it's super easy to be building something that others discussed a year ago, and it's hard to know if you're reinventing the wheel. With all the different nips and kinds, it's hard to keep track of what is what and the singular way of doing something. Once moving away from the social media part of it to the 'other stuff', it feels very wild west, and everyone doing what's right in their own eyes.

Yep, that's all an Index is doing.
And yes, it could search relays instead of the index server. It needs to know which relays to search. It's not highly efficient. I search across 100 relays, I may get 100 results back, and I have to parse through all those results, combine them, and remove any duplicates. It's all doable, but it introduces another set of problems.

The Podcast Index costs them $900 a month to index and serve all of the podcasts. The amount of data being sent with 4 million feeds is surprisingly expensive. Perhaps sending it across relays is different, but I suspect bandwidth is bandwidth whether it's across a websocket or http.

Totally doable. Sign an event, but put the signature in the feed to prove ownership, upload the feed to multiple servers. If the signature is legit, the servers replace the feed with the updated one. Add a new tag so a podcast app know there's more than one server to pull the feed from, just in case the main server is down for whatever reason. No need to replace podcasting, just add some of the great ideas from nostr to make it better.

You want to talk about using precise language, but don't seem to be aware of the history of v4v and the community that adopted it. NWC for Podcasting 2.0 is going to problematic. If you have a value block in your podcast, you've been using keysend, you probably just didn't realize it. Most wallets don't support keysend. If you want to use your wallet of choice to send sats to your favorite podcaster, probably won't happen unless the podcaster switches to lnaddress in their value block, or the wallet starts supporting keysend.

Storing feeds on relays would need to be ironed out some, change the kind and such, but is totally workable. The relay could also store the feed as a traditional xml file and serve it to the podcast players over http the same as it's been done for the last 20 years, so the feed could work with nostr clients and legacy podcast players.

I like to do thought experiments where I imagine entities I don't agree with start implementing the protocols I'm using. How could they misuse it in ways I wish they didn't? I wonder if in practice, when the Twitters and Googles and Facebooks start noticing nostr, and building their own relays so they can suck up all of the free data, if what will end up happening is the vast majority of people will end up using the big three relays, because it's the only way to guarantee that your message is seen by everyone.
I suspect that's what will happen. The wallet wars lead me to believe that. Rather than promote sovereign solutions, we've entered a point where ease of use and always working is what more and more people are looking for, even if it's a custodial solution. I worry relays and clients will end up being the same way.

The Boomers (my parents) were/are fucked. The question I continually ask myself, is what would I do differently? What are things I will do for my children and grandchildren that my parents should've done for me and my children.
Every one of my parent's siblings got a sizable inheritance. Not a single one used it to help their children starting out. They bought jet-ski's and remodeled their houses. My inheritance will not be going to my children to be squandered on frivolous trinkets. I will be leaving it to my children's children, to give them a head start.
Imagine not having to pay a mortgage or rent for 40 years, and being able to take that money and invest it and compound it over 40 years. That one small act of giving them a boost early in life could build generational wealth.
I am also not done being a father when my children turn 18. When they have their own children, I will be there as a mentor, both for my adult children, who are now learning how to be parents, and for my grandchildren, who need the patience and wisdom of one who has been through the difficulties of raising children.
Anyway, it sounds like an interesting book.

Most of the PC2.0 apps don't support lnaddress yet. If you have a wallet that supports keysend, which Alby does, you should choose keysend (or node) so you can get all of the metadata that keysend allows us to attach.
You can use lnaddress, but a lot of the apps will fail with their payments until they get around to supporting lnaddress.
I've changed SF back to default to using keysend, since you're not the first one to be confused by the changes.

Ok, so I'm hosting files on Next Cloud and File Browser. I get a long string with .local when I share the file. When I open that string on a different computer, I get connection not private warnings because I don't have a certificate for that site on my other computer. For sharing media and files for podcasting. How does Start9 handle SSL stuff when sharing files?

I can mess around with it for MSP since that's the easier code base, and musicians can start doing their own hosting. I had done it once for these guys, which is basically Start9 as a service. https://www.federated.computer/ so I know it's possible.

How hard is it to access files on Start 9? I've heard it's pretty locked down for security, but maybe I'm misunderstanding.
Music Side Project could very easily be updated to run locally for drag and dropping files and saving them on the machine.
Sovereign Feeds could also be updated to do the same, but would take a bit more time as it's a much older code base and I've learned a lot since then and would probably need to do a rewrite of a bunch of stuff to remove a bunch of unnecessary stuff.

That's my ideal, but I understand it's not ideal for most people. Freedom takes extra steps.
You're a farmer/rancher, you have freedom from the food supply chain to a larger degree than I do, but you know the extra work it takes. And you need people that don't want to farm/ranch to sell your excess food to. People that support your values can without living your lifestyle.
I see certain podcast hosts in a similar light. They can support my values, though for me, the ideal is to self host.

The video editing would be handled by different software. Podcasting/RSS is more about pointing players to the edited video and images that you have on a server. Most podcasting companies have you pay them to host your files on their computer and help you to build the RSS feed, which is just a text document all of the podcast players are programmed to read and display.

Could they promote my work or repurpose it or make artwork for it?
Is their labor in support of my work valuable?

Why would an app dev point people away from his app? Most of the app devs are trying to make a buck off of their app, the last thing they want you doing is using a competitor's app.

I’m personally ok with running my own node, but I’ve had custodial wallets that I kept the amount of sats I was comfortable losing in.
Node managing can be a bit of a pain. I’m not sure having someone do it for you for small amounts to zap with is so bad.

Most people are comfortable with custodial solutions. PC2.0 was no different. Until Alby changed their model, we all used their custodial wallet. I just want an easy wallet that I can easily move sats in and out and easily attach to any app. And sending payments is seamless.

By and large, yes. It’s the best tool for automatic payments; ie send 1 sat per minute while listening to the podcast, aka streaming. Also the most efficient way to send payments to multiple wallets. However, we’ve been recently shifting to lnaddress, and the players are slowly shifting to work with either keysend or less efficiently with lnaddress

If you're a Bitcoiner that doesn't homestead, I'm going to suggest you try a homesteading activity this year. You'll develop an appreciation for other long time preference activities you that will enhance your life.
Here's a few ideas.
1) Create your own hard apple cider. It's dead simple, and costs under $20 for the supplies. And if you buy the apple juice in one of the glass gallon jugs, you have a cool jug to keep. Apple Cider takes time, and often the longer you wait, the better it gets.
2) Develop and maintain your own sour dough starter, and make bread every few weeks.
3) Grow a tomato from seed. There's something very magical about watching the life cycle of a plant, and getting food out of it.
4) Ferment. I like creme fraiche, kombucha, and sauerkraut.

Layer 1 - actual musicians spend years honing their craft, record music, release it to the world
Layer 2 - engineers spend years learning to program, take the music, upload it to their computers, and develop algorithms to replicate the music with variation
Layer 3 - some dude spends a few minutes typing a few instructions into the computer program built at layer 2, gets some some par music and lyrics spit out to him, he puts it up on a Platform, adds a value block, then wants you to send him sats

It brings up an interesting question. If you can surgically censor something as abhorrent as CP, then you can also surgically censor other forms of speech. And I’m not even sure how you can censor it. Any asshole can create an nsec, link to abhorrent content, post it to multiple relays, and tag it as asknostr. You can ban that npub, but creating another one is trivial. And it’s not like cloaking IPs is difficult. It seems like it becomes a game of whack-a-mole in which any jackass can easily ruin your experience if you happen to be looking at content based on an innocent tag.

I use the analogy of playing the piano when describing why I impose boundaries with my children, and how those boundaries lead to their freedom.

If you’re just building an mp3 player and worried about zapping a single address, podcasting on nostr is actually quite doable. What I’ve been finding quite problematic is how you handle splits. Imagine if someone zaps by opening up CashApp to pay an invoice. Now imagine doing that 16 times per zap to pay each split. Until splits are handled more elegantly, I think anyone interested in podcasting will stick with the tools PC2.0 has developed.

Podcasting 2.0 embraced splits. Without controlling wallets, splits are harder to do in nostr. The Skirmish had like 16 splits or something. That’s a very bad user experience using lnaddress only wallets.

As long as the wallet supports keysend. lnaddress still creates a poor UX when dealing with splits, and many podcasts still have keysend addresses in their feeds. I’m not sure we’re getting away from keysend in podcasting any time soon.

Do you remember a site called Postcard or something, where you could anonymously confess something for the whole internet to read by sending in a postcard and they would put it on their site?
If I had an app that let people anonymously write their confession, then created a signed event using the nsec for the confess-bot account anyone could follow, then sent the event to relays, would that be a nostr app?

Dude, you obviously don't know me. I've built nothing but tools that make it easy for others to host their own content so they don't have to worry about being rug pulled when their podcast or music hosting company decides they live in the wrong country, because believe me, it's happened, even in this 'freedom' space.
I can't make it any easier for them than to host it for them; but then I just become another platform that can rug pull them.
I have a hillbilly mailman banjo player @npub14c7…l5l2 using my tools to host his own music on his own WordPress website, so this is open to anyone that just wants to put in a modicum of effort.
If you're too fucking lazy to read through a 30 step tutorial and drag and drop some files into your browser, then you deserve to be de-platformed, and I have no sympathy for you.
