The only counter to that I'd argue is that with a fully collateralized loan, there is no capital creation in the process and therefore is not a ponzi. Even if the borrower turned around and purchased additional bitcoin with the loan proceeds they received, there is no new capital in the system inherent to the origination of the loan if the bank is simply using their own acquired capital to provide these services (both the loan origination and the later bitcoin brokering).
I think your argument against lending in this case here isn't necessarily against lending specifically, but against the idea of fractional reserve banking that creates new capital via debt and therefore does meet the definition of a ponzi as you described. The capital that gets created can never be fully realized if everyone decides to cash out or break terms at any given time. Money was created out of thin air based on future obligations. If all lending was fully collateralized, then any loan could be closed out at any time without risk of loss for either party. What creates the problems is the fractional reserve part.

The lender would have full control of the bitcoin locked in the 2 of 2 multisig since they would be the one given the bitcoin in the commitment transaction. So there shouldn't be any need for additional collateral.

I think perhaps a more secure way of lending would be with a 1 of 2 multisig walletb(borrower and lender each holding a key) with each party signing a commitment transaction for the term of the loan. The borrower is then timelocked from the bitcoin until the end of the loan term, but the lender can spend the bitcoin at any time.
Then, the borrower has some guarantees that if the lender goes belly up during the loan period, then can retrieve their bitcoin after the timelock is up. But the lender has guarantees of the collateral value during the life of the loan.
This is similar to how the lightning network HTLCs work. Just a thought.
Not sure how that'd work in the legal world though. Usually a company that goes belly up sells off their assets, of which the loans still need to be paid back. But still probably better than traditional multisig.
Time locks are great for inheritance though!

Don't get me wrong, as someone who has retired at the age of 42 and have been debt free aside from a mortgage on my home, I abhor debt and understand that more than anyone. But everyone's financial situation is different and saying a penny of debt is equal to slavery is nothing but hyperbole.
Sure, living in a van and travelling the world is a great and free life style. But some people want families and a home and land for their children to grow up in. Who is more enslaved in that regard then, the renter or the home owner with a mortgage?
Everything is relative in the end.

If the LTV ratio is 100%, then you're not really relinquishing control of anything that wouldn't have been spent anyways, no? In the long run I think bitcoin loans will trend toward these higher LTV ratios and thus make taking loans on your bitcoin a better option than it is today.

I agree, I think patents definitely favor large corporations more than small businesses. A lot of corporations simply have defensive patents, not for the sake of actually producing a product of their own, but to prevent other companies from producing a competing product. But I certainly can see a benefit toward small start ups with a unique product idea trying to make it to market against larger companies. Perhaps make patents only last a year or two rather than the decade plus they last now?

One defense of patents is hear is that a smaller business with a new idea never has a chance to compete against a large conglomerate that can just steal their ideas and use their immense resources to scale and make it to market faster. I don't have any good answers either way, but I can understand that argument. A lot of good arguments against patents as well.

It baffles me there are people that want any sizable portion of the bitcoin network running on knots. It isn't just about code review either. Knots has one dev/maintainer. This means you could potentially have one single dev with the ability to push out a code change that people running knots will blindly install upon new release.
Imagine if 50%+ of the bitcoin network were running Knots with one person having the ability to maintain the code of all those nodes. That is a scary proposition and it is insane to me that there are bitcoiners promoting that idea.
Imagine a backdoor in all those nodes or a breaking code change. Yes, many would catch the change and not push said new release to their nodes, but many would. Yes, it would very quickly become breaking news for all to urgently hear in the community. But that's not the point. That's not how you maintain the codebase for a multi-trillion dollar monetary network. You don't have one maintainer for a critical codebase like this.
It isn't one person "standing on the backs of giants." It is one person with control.

It does matter. If the attacker doesn't have access to the blind oracle server (it was taken offline/deleted) then it could be argued that a HWW with a secure element intact would be the easier target than the Jade HWW without a corresponding blind oracle. Since what would be needed to perform an attack is in hand with the secure element HWW versus the now deleted blind oracle with the Jade.
Obviously this would depend upon knowing that your Jade was stolen to begin with to be able to respond in kind with deleting your blind oracle server to begin with.
But my argument wasn't that one is better than the other as often in security it isn't so black and white. I was merely presenting a specific attack path where having a separate blind oracle could present a more difficult challenge than a secure element.

A bitcoin node still downloads and validates all transactions and blocks, even if pruning is enabled. And if you set up your node to track your wallet history, it will store those transactions even if they're past the prune period.

Are you referring to a stale channel state that's been published that is now outside of the CSV timelock period? Yes, competing for confirmation in a block in that case would be paramount.
But prior to that you'd still have plenty of time (days) to penalize a stale force close attempt due to the to_self_delay that you set for the channel when you opened it. A time-locked transaction wouldn't validate on any node prior to that.

Your original response was you acknowledging you responded before reading my post thoroughly. Now rather than clicking the link I provided that goes into detail the rationale for removing the OP_RETURN limit, you disregard it asking me to provide you reasoning for reading it. In doing so, you expose yourself for not knowing that the person who wrote what I linked to is the one that started the debate in the mailing list and thus have shown you also haven't read that discussion there either.
The logic for removing it is sound from a protocol perspective. Keeping the limit in place risks more centralization, more transactions moving to alternative relay networks, and more censorship. Both of which harms the network more than anything that would come from having no limit with OP_RETURN data.
"Honest actors?" Please, stop with that narrative. Pieter Wuille, Adam Gibson, Antoine Poinsot, Jameson Loop, Greg Maxwell, Sjors Provoost, and more...these are all highly respected developers in the community that have worked tirelessly to build bitcoin to what it is today. To insinuate they have nothing but its best long term interests in mind is unproductive.

When you actually start to think about what a bitcoin transaction is, you realize how silly this statement is and begin to understand what Waxwing is saying.
If I just consolidate my UTXOs, is that a "financial" transaction?
What about when bitcoin had no monetary value? Were those financial transactions?
Bitcoin users have been embedding data into txns from the very first block. Are those "financial" transactions?
What about timestamps? Are those allowed?
It is a slippery slope when you start to dictate what transactions are allowed and which ones aren't.
This isn't about making sure hosting a node is sustainable. There are already size limits for both txns and blocks that keep ongoing storage requirements of hosting a node linear. What we're talking about is the fundamental ethics of whether or not certain transactions should be censored or not.
And then there are the very real consequences about what that censorship can do to the open protocol by incentivizing the use of private txn broadcast networks outside of the default mempool or incentivizing data storage in UTXOs which actually does make running a node and mining more costly.

You either have to completely ignore those 4 pillar of scientific analysis I mentioned or accept that saturated fat is very damaging to cardiovascular and metabolic health. There is no other reconciliation of that.
But like I said, don't take my word for it. Eat a diet high in saturated fat and then go get your apolipoprotein-B levels checked with a blood test. If you want to conclude that maintaining high levels of apolipoprotein-B in in your bloodstream is safe, then that's your risk and not mine.

I generally stick to searches on scholar.google.com.
I usually follow correlations, biological mechanisms of action, statistical significance, and meta-analysis to make a judgement on whether something is generally healthy. I agree that oils and fats in general are not good in excess, but it is pretty clear when taking into account those 4 pillars of scientific analysis that saturated fats are far more damaging to one's health than unsaturated fats.
Don't take my word for it though. It only take a few weeks of trial and testing on one's health and habits to see results for yourself.
That's why I highly recommend everyone adhere to their own diet and get tested with a lipid panel and an apolipoprotein-B test to see that diet's effects on their health. It is the strongest biomarker we have for cardiovascular health. Unfortunately it isn't a part of most standard lipid panels yet, even though it should be.

Voter turnout for the 18-25 demographic was its highest in 50 years in 2020. Still not close to what the turn out is for the 65+ demographic though. There are about 50 million in that 65+ group, so I'm not sure if turnout is the main issue here given the population sizes and the popularity of the program across all those demographics.
I think as Lyn put it, it is a marketing issue. I don't think people know enough about how the program works to be able to vote accordingly. It probably wouldn't be nearly as popular of a program otherwise.

Positive feedback is so important to give. Not just because of the fact that it is positive, but also because when you have to give negative feedback, it makes that individual more receptive to it.
Positive feedback should be given in a ratio greater than 3:1 with negative feedback. No one wants to hear negative feedback all the time. More positives than negatives make the negatives more productive and responsive.
Also, when giving positive feedback, provide the "why." If you give the reasons why you appreciated an effort given, then it comes off more genuine and also allows the person to understand what you valued in what they did.

Anytime a bitcoin service shuts down, it is just further proof that you need to host all your necessary bitcoin infrastructure yourself. Have contingency plans and alternatives ready in case any given project you're utilizing stops being supported.
I've always been hosting my own applications across my entire stack. But I feel for people impacted when a service shuts down. A lot of people don't have the expertise or time to be able to maintain and update everything required for a full self-custodial solution. But it is so important that we all have the option and right to do so.
This will certainly get easier over time. The development in this space happens so quick. But as quick as new developments are made, just as quickly some can fail. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

No, you don't need kernel mode access to hook into API calls like NtReadVirtualMemory, NtOpenProcess, etc which are all API calls that exist in usermode space. Having usermode hooks certainly makes it easier for malware to thus unhook the security agent and avoid detection. So it is a trade off.

The update isn't rolled out via an agent update. The update is a detection controlled by Crowd strike and it is how their solution operates. It is a fairly black box solution that handles detections on its own. It is one of the reasons why SOC's love it because they can focus on triage rather than tuning since many orgs don't have the in-house expertise or resources to create detections for all the latest threats. Out sourcing security like this has a huge cost though as we see.

It is installed as a kernel mode driver which is even higher privileges than a user mode admin. It isn't quite standard for EDR agents as there are a lot of solutions whose agents only use usermode hooking for their detections.

Careful on the Wallstreet Journal website today. I've been investigating a malware ad campaign that is delivered from their website. Not that anyone should be viewing their news site anyway since it is garbage, but just be extra careful.
It leads to a bogus WSJ website (wsj[.]pm) that says you need to download an extension to continue viewing their website. If you click install it will download malware that runs some malicious powershell scripts.

I love solar. I have it on the roof of my house and it allows me to generate my own power rather than relying on someone else.
