I wrote this note the other day but kept it in draft I was so disgusted and didn't want to bring up politics. But it fits perfectly here...
I just heard this story first hand from a canvasser. It pretty much sums up why I hate politics.
The canvasser just finished going around to a few houses. Most houses didn't respond/weren't home, some were positive, but one was nasty.
That nasty homeowner also happened to have a sign out stating NO SOLICITORS. The canvasser mentioned that canvassing during election season is not considered soliciting as determined by the courts. SERIOUSLY?! (Talk about rules for my thee but not for me, but I digress)
These people were neighbors of said canvasser. Why would someone act like that to their neighbor? First to ignore their wishes for no solicitation and then spat over the legality.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

If you use products, products containing lard or tallow are probably cleanest right now. Eventually, after they catch on, the industrialization of even these products could become questionable, but it's still early. Know your source or make yourself (easier than you think).

There is a significant amount of research and work happening at PSU regarding this species, to the point that their hybridization efforts with the Chinese chestnut are at a point where DNA testing is usually required to determine American vs hybridized chestnuts.
We ordered some trees through the Ten Million trees initiative with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation a few years ago, but just prior to delivery we were told they tested as hybrids despite advertising as American. We planted them anyway. I hope to one day plant American chestnuts on our farm for my kids, but that's still a few years away from being commercially available (last I checked).
Finding chestnuts in the wild, even hybrid, is a rare and awesome experience! Anyone interested, especially local to PA should sign up for the PA chapter newsletter to follow their work.

We decided to take a break from the farm after how busy this spring was... Meaning we were down to our cows and a some sheep (instead of all that plus gardening, broiler chickens, and pigs).
Well, that decision lasted barely 2 months.
I credit (blame?) @nprofile…lgdj and the educational note about ducks. I guess I was 'influenced'. Congratulations, you're officially an influencer! ...I also expected my wife to put up some resistance to the idea, but that didn't happen. 🤷
We didn't end up with ducks, but rather white Chinese geese.
Truth is I've been loosely keeping my eye out specifically for this breed for about a year or so now and a listing just happened to come up a short drive away.
They're temporarily closed in the barn to settle in, but they'll be out to roam the farm and swim the pond in no time.

Two Christmas's ago I gifted $33 worth of Bitcoin which was about 200k sats and a copy of The Bitcoin Standard.

Nostr content needs to move beyond Bitcoin to attract more nocoiners. I've been engaging almost exclusively with non Bitcoin, non financial content for this reason.
Everyone here today has the opportunity to be the foundation of whatever community they want to grow on nostr. Send out that signal and the nostr algorithm will find you.
Move to where the future is going. Bitcoin and nostr. Post and live as if they are both already globally adopted. Don't waste your most scarce resource, your time, promoting either one. Sheep wake up when the wolves get danger close. The evils of this world will do the purple and orange pilling for us.
The more involved I become, the more I look at my notes as a personal diary that I can pass on to my kid(s), preserved on my self hosted relay for as long as they want to remember me without the need to trust any corporation, data profiteering models, etc. All the other stuff being built on nostr is just extra.

Completed the first phase of the next timber framing project this weekend. Adding a bench to the mudroom section. Matching the shelf from earlier. The joinery on this build was significantly easier than the shelf (the diagonal brace on the shelf is one of the more complex joints to figure out in timber framing... No idea why I started with that).
These are the majority of the tools used for building the frame.

I feel I've become much better getting more accurate cuts with the handsaw and laying out my cut lines. This reduces the amount of work required with the chisel. The wood is very far from square or straight, but it's just a bench 🤷

Hogging out the open faced, crossing mortises on top of the legs is by far the hardest part of this build. Encountering cedar knots is a very unpleasant experience and slows the process considerably. Paying attention to grain direction is critical to avoid split outs. I had a few on this project as you can see, but once the bench top is installed most flaws should be well hidden.

Adding the first layer of the crossing tenons starts to bring the joinery to reality.

Had to pound in the cross pieces to join the two sets of legs completes the joint and really tightens up the whole frame.

The final dimensions are 24"x50"x18" for the frame with a 2" top yet to come. I'll likely end up lower the posts to account for the thick top plus leveling for the floor.

Practiced my timber framing joinery skills on a much needed mudroom shelf for the farm boots. It's super fun and very rewarding to see the end result knowing how much work went into this project, despite the many cosmetic flaws and imperfections.
I cut the cedar trees ~2 years ago, milled them here on the farm, stacked them to dry last summer, designed the shelf and joinery, and did most of the work with hands tools.

Goats get a lot of attention, but I rarely ever meet anyone that eats goat meat. It would be a bugger to market in my area I'm afraid. Between that and dying easily I don't see why they get all the attention. Goats need more woody browse, not pasture, to be done properly.

I couldn't find the post to reply to it, but wanted to mention we've had good success with organic practices, but both members of our cartel practice frequent moving to, which I think you employ longer stays.
Redmond's salt with infused garlic is a favorite of all of our livestock.
We've used Garlic Barrier (only the large bottle is concentrated) as a spot treatment for stock with issues.
We've fed copper sulfate straight free choice (small quantities). Alternative to this is mix Fertrells Grazing Choice with copper into your rotation.
The other member also drenches with organic ACV.

Not sure what you mean sheep vs lambs? Breeding ewes vs just buying in lambs? That's individual context based.
As far as feeding going it's all grass (or hay) all the time with us. Bigger animals just need more of it. Plan about 3% dry matter per head per day. 4%+ for cushion and adding to soil fertility with bale grazing.

Ram lambs have moved from the lambing farm to our place where they will grow out for meat sales to local bitcoiners and breeding stock sales to other sheep farmers.
The "Bitcoin Lamb Cartel" as it's been coined locally was born out of a Bitcoin meetup a few years ago, where another Bitcoin regenerative farmer and my wife got to talking. As markets turned down we decided to sell our sheep flock and enter into partnership to raise and market lambs, while on our farm we also started the transition to raising cattle--something we always got requests to do from customers, especially local bitcoiners.
Our practices are all grass fed, from birth to butcher. This partnership provides flexibility as to when lambs get butchered. Some customers prefer smaller lambs, so before winter hits we generally hit 70-80 pounds live weight. For those looking for a more meaty carcass we overwinter the lambs with our cattle and feed winter stockpile and hay as needed and then butcher after the spring flush in late June for a much larger carcass of 130+ live weight. We haven't pushed to a second fall yet for even heavier weights, but maybe we'll do some experimenting with this group?

The advancements in the ag sector are butting up against physical limitations of productivity per unit of sunlight. Monoculture grain production has been essentially maxed out for decades planting "fence row to fence row" since the Earl Butz days of the USDA. Most improvements have actually been in the realm of labor efficiency, which further kills rural communities already destroyed by big ag policies. These costs have transitioned from being labor costs to technological and machinery expenses.

What people don't seem to understand is how long inflation takes to ripple through the agricultural industry.
Conventional food production is energy intensive. Fuel prices contribute to fertilizer prices which contribute to grain prices which impact conventional meat prices. Add in the fact many producers try to secure input prices a year ahead of time, further kicking inflation down the road.
High quality grass fed producers have greater resilience to these pressures as the price of hay is likely the biggest impact, which is readily planned for during "good hay making years." (Another example of delaying inflation in agriculture.)
Inflation hits the lowest quality food production the hardest because they're already in competition to be the cheapest producer. As a result, fast food is a great gauge on real inflation rates.
I haven't even touched on the impacts that the drought can and is having on agricultural prices. Cattle markets are at all time highs. As parts of the country come out of drought demand is increasing for female livestock to start recovering from selling off during the drought years (national cattle numbers are fairly low). Coupled with stronger demand for beef the cattle market is expected to experience a super cycle.
It isn't unreasonable to be securing beef for your family now for the next 1-2 years from your LOCAL Bitcoin farmer/rancher. And if you don't have one, orange pill one. Regenerative ag and Bitcoin were made for each other.
Rehypothecation isn't just a gold and bank vault issue. It's happening in cattle markets too. Get eyes on your beef while it's on the hoof.

Selling meat to bitcoiners and getting paid in Bitcoin for the months (or sometimes years) it takes to produce just hits different than when paid in fiat.
It does something to the soul. It goes beyond transactional. Like a last honor to the animal providing them nourishment.
I don't even process any of our fiat transactions anymore for our business. It just feels cold and heartless to exchange an eroding currency.

My favorite thing about Starlink internet is that when a storm rolls through the internet goes out.

Geomagnetic Reversal (pole shift) is happening, even my self-hosted AI told me so.
Despite being prompted to prove that it is fiction, it debunked it's own attempts to debunk geomagnetic reversal on what are otherwise weak arguments to start. I also included the 3 rather strong arguments in support of GR to highlight the difference in its favorable conviction.
Three findings debunking or questioning geomagnetic pole shift:
Lack of Rapid Changes: While there is evidence for polarity reversals in the past, these changes do not seem to happen rapidly. Geomagnetic reversals take place over thousands to millions of years, which questions the idea that a sudden, catastrophic shift could occur within human timescales or even within the lifetimes of geologically significant species.
Stability of the Inner Core: The inner core is believed to be the primary source of Earth's magnetic field. However, it is composed mainly of liquid iron and nickel, which do not exhibit stable magnetization over long periods. This raises questions about how a stable magnetic field can be maintained during the process of geomagnetic reversal.
The Role of Geodynamo Theory: The Geodynamo Theory explains the Earth's magnetic field as a result of convection currents in the liquid outer core. It suggests that the magnetic field should be relatively stable unless there are significant changes in the dynamics of these currents. However, understanding the exact mechanisms driving geomagnetic reversals and how they influence the Geodynamo Theory remains an ongoing area of research.
Three discoveries supporting geomagnetic pole shift:
Fossil Magnetization Records: Studies of sedimentary rocks dating back millions of years have shown a pattern in the orientation of tiny magnetic minerals preserved within them. This pattern indicates that the Earth's magnetic field has indeed reversed its polarity multiple times in the past.
Lava Flow Analysis: Magnetic measurements taken from lava flows can provide information about the direction and strength of the Earth's magnetic field at the time they were formed. Analysis of these measurements has shown evidence of geomagnetic reversals.

In response to the bank failures in early 2023 we decided to pull money out of the bank and invest in some cows... Into assets we're comfortable with and control. This was at the same time we learned my wife was expecting our first child, we had a few dozen pigs on farm, a good flock of sheep, and were gearing up for our veggie CSA. Suffice it to say, we thought we were crazy, but onward we went anyway.
As the birth of our child was nearing last fall we attempted to AI our cows. It was a disaster. 0 for 3 the first try. In our second attempt we went 1 for 3. This calf is a result of that. In another 2-2.5 years we'll actually get some beef.
(We gave up on AI and paid a small fortune for a great bull shortly after our child was born.)
Beef is a long game.

The power of water to accomplish work is vastly underrated and practically forgotten today. It can do this work 24/7. It doesn't need to generate electricity for the electric to be transported to motors to do the work. It can perform work without costly modern conveniences.
We need more of this type of work.

I find Terrance to be a revolutionary.
Are some of his ideas crazy? Absolutely. But humanity doesn't make progress by conforming to groupthink and cancellation on the fear of mental illness because someone thinks differently than the status quo. If that were the case all of nostr should be wrapped in a jacket.
Seeing elements in 3D is considerably more accurate than fiat influencer 2D block based periodic tables. I explained it to someone recently with 40 years of metallurgical expertise and he immediately got it. 🤷

There are occasionally times when I kick myself for my "Bitcoin mentality" ... Do it once, do it right. Multi generational thinking.
Expected to start installing line posts on this section of fence this morning. My guide wire was hitting a tree... Barely. I contemplated just going around it, but the fence wouldn't be straight and it would inevitably cause issues as the tree grows.
3 hours later, those 2 inches have been fixed..

Soil macro biology is awesome. These cow pies are less than a day old and the dung beetles are already hard at work. The use of pour on meds like Ivermectin (commonly used to treat parasites in cattle) would kill these little buggers.
