On my political wishlist is for congressmen and the courts to recognize the tariffs as illegal on the grounds that many (if not most) of them have nothing to do with national security interests, which is what currently gives him the legal argument that he can do this. Congress originally held the power to impose tariffs (last major tariff regime was set by a law, the Smoot-Hawley Act).
Even cynical politicians should be able to see it as politically advantageous once the pain really starts to set in, which is why I think there’s a chance of this.

Agreed about the scarcity of food being independent from the money supply, but there’s also massive food waste in developed countries and in the US in particular. In that sense, the problem is still allocative and not totally about scarcity. If we really cared about hunger, we’d also make marginal investment into food (forego other scarce resource production).

From Roger Ver’s account given in “Hijacking Bitcoin”, the big blockers weren’t satisfied by segwit2x either because they anticipate much higher transaction volume. Big blockers want bitcoin to scale on layer 1, instead of via a second layer in the form of Lightning. Roger references a few times where both transaction time and cost became problems and how early failures of Lightning made its ability to solve them questionable.
I understand his misgivings about having a majority of BTC holders never transact either. I agree that keeping those people in (instead of forking them) makes sense, and that it’s up to coiners to make tools and advocate for adoption, so that this majority begins to transact. But his point about UTXOs being a clunky workaround holds , and I’m still unsure about trading security for scale.
Need to read up on the tradeoff in security for scale and how Lightning works these days, tbh. Would love to hear what @nprofile…dg4z thinks.

I’m not too techinical, but NVIDIA popularized dedicated GPUs as a concept too, right? From that concept to what GPUs are today is an incredible testament to focus and iteration imo.

I feel the same toward them, but I also recognize that their behavior is guided by opportunism. They create grift on a foundation of something which has broad appeal, and I try to focus on the reasons for which crypto has that appeal instead of the opportunity it creates for such grift. We should all be active in the education that you mention, be advocates, identify well-intentioned challenges to projects we support and further the discourse. On an economic level, the knowledge of why BTC was conceived in the first place should enlighten a precoiner to the fiat system that keeps them impoverished, and hopefully lead them to invest in a way that frees them from the poverty that incentivized their participation in scams at all.

I remember the repo spike, reading this made me realize I should read up on that post-mortem. About the repo facility drying up, doesn’t the excess liquidity reduce the need for that sort of (super) short-term facility anyway? Once the liquidity is in the system, it only leaves if central banks are selling securities, right? That would be the mechanism by which the Fed pulls back those excess reserves as you mentioned, so the pace of that will be important to watch, but I don’t see the Fed selling at a clip that materially disrupts markets.
