We live in an age of digital ghosts. Late last year, my friend Darren died unexpectedly. We had spoken a few weeks before his death and made vague plans to meet on what would turn out to be the day after his last on earth. I’ve thought about him often since then. I can still hear his voice, that languid drawl indicative of an East Texas upbringing. His contact information remains in my phone; I can’t bring myself to delete it. As a result, I got a notification earlier today that he had joined Telegram. It was a gut punch. Of course, he didn’t just sign up. Rather, the person who received his discontinued number from the phone company did. It’s made me think about the digital traces of ourselves we leave behind and the technological artifacts that those who live on maintain. His contact details are still in my phone. Damn, I miss him.

Definitely a great analogy because email is the protocol everyone knows but most don’t think of it in those terms. They just relate it to the products (e.g., Gmail). When folks only talk about the products and not the protocol is when we know it’s gone mainstream. Quick thoughts from a (relative) normie evangelizing #Nostr on day 1 of #TOKEN2049 in Singapore:
- Of the dozen folks I’ve spoken to, 2 had heard of Nostr before, 3 realized they had heard of Nostr but didn’t realize it until I started describing it, and 7 had never heard of it
- I didn’t have the time (and the people I talked to didn’t have the patience) to onboard in the hallways at the event; it has to be faster and easier (I know, this isn’t news)
- The “a-ha” moment came when I showed people my profile and feed on @npub1pu3…tfch and then immediately opened @npub18m7…q955 and showed them all the same stuff was there, but the two clients offer different user experiences and features

As a protocol, #Nostr makes it possible for communities to form around any topic, location, or other point of commonality permissionlessly and provide value to and for members via Lightning payments all in a censorship-resistant way. One example of the kind of project I think you’re describing would be a Nostr client implementation of a community savings system—like the sou-sou savings clubs that exist throughout Africa and the Caribbean, largely driven by women, which have a long and rich history.

I agree on the UI. I also use 3 clients, but that’s because I want different things from them. Part of what I like about Nostr is that I’m not stuck with one app to rule them all. Different features and different experiences, same social graph.

I’m going to start highlighting some of the research coming out of the #HCI lab I’m in at Vanderbilt that focuses on teen online safety that may provide insights to inform product and development work on Nostr.
In 2022, Dr. Akter led a project where teens and parents installed software on their respective smartphones that allowed them to see what apps were on each other’s phones and view their respective privacy and security settings. Here’s what she and the team found:
- Teens are (perhaps not surprisingly) much more aware of data privacy risks with respect to third-party apps than their parents (many teens were shocked and dismayed by what they saw as poor data and device security and privacy management by their parents)
- Parents were less concerned about privacy and security settings and much more worried about apps that allowed teens to message others (especially adults) the parents didn’t know
- Teens felt uncomfortable monitoring their parents and upending the parent/teen power dynamic, but had much more productive communication about device and internet use as a result of being aware of each other’s apps and settings
Food for thought:
- How can we better educate users about privacy and security on Nostr?
- How can we make the settings in our apps simple and straightforward for less privacy- and security- savvy users?
- How can we encourage more community dialogue about privacy and security from a practical (rather than just philosophical or ideological) perspective?

Recipe: Sweet-and-Sour Brisket
Combine in a blender and blend until smooth:
1 medium onion, peeled and quartered
2 tsp ground ginger
8-10 large cloves garlic
1 cup ketchup
¼ cup dry sherry
¼ cup sake
¼ cup cider vinegar
¼ cup soy sauce
¼ cup honey
¼ cup Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon coarsely ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
1½ cups Coca-Cola, ginger ale, or Dr. Pepper
Into a Dutch oven or other large pot with a tight-fitting lid place:
1 first-cut brisket, 6 to 7 pounds (2.7-3.2kg), rinsed and patted thoroughly dry
Pour sauce over brisket, place lid on pot, roast in oven for 3 hours. Flip roast and return to oven for 3 hours or until fork tender.
Remove roast to rest. Skim fat from sauce and reduce if desired. Serve immediately with sauce or cool, cover brisket and refrigerate overnight in cooking pan. The next day, defat sauce, reduce if desired, and reheat meat in sauce before serving.

#CapitalInnovation is where all of my brain’s excess computing capacity is going atm. We have to address this “missing middle” between extractive and exploitative VCs on one extreme and total charity on the other. Funding structures that support an exit to community are how we can sustain organizations that contribute value to the commons. Rather than chasing unicorns, we should be sustaining zebras. Zebras actually exist in the wild; a group of them is called a Dazzle. I’m looking for ideas and input on how to start “Dazzle Fund”. It’s time for me to move on from thinking and planning. In addition to catching up, we chatted about opportunities to address the "missing middle" in capital deployment. Things I do as a #sober person attending offsites / events:
1. Ask organizers in advance about what alcohol-free options will be available at team happy hours and dinner events. This not only helps me plan, but also gets them to think about how to make the event more welcoming and fun for sober folks. There are always more of us than the planners expect, but our societal default is alcohol, so a gentle prompt can be helpful.
2. BYOB. If the non-CH3CH2OH choices are H2O (and H2O+CO2), then I will often bring something of my own along. Hydration is always good and I still enjoy having something fun and different at a celebratory event.
3. Smile when I tell people I don’t drink. For a while, I felt vulnerable and (sometimes) even a sense of shame when I said that I didn’t drink. What assumptions were people making about me? (There is a whole topic in psychology, known as ‘felt understanding’, that addresses how our behavior is affected by what we think others think about us. Tl;dr: We think people think a lot about us and our choices, but really people are more concerned with themselves). I have found that when I project confidence about my choice not to drink, I worry less about whether I am being judged.
4. Remember that anyone who wants to debate (or, in some cases, tease) me about my choice not to drink is only telling on themselves. For a host of various reasons, some people interpret my choice to not drink as a referendum on their choices. It isn’t (see point above about felt understanding). They are unhappy with their choices and I remind them of that. I remind myself that I am not responsible for their feelings about their choices or behaviors.
5. Enjoy myself. One of the reasons I continue to choose sobriety (and it is a choice I make every day) is that I have found I am more present and engaged in the moment without alcohol. I remind myself of what I am gaining because of my choice, the gift of truly having fun as myself.

Certainly possible, but it doesn’t help the board to be opaque in its statements if that’s the case. They earn back trust by making the point publicly that they don’t tolerate that behavior. The truth will come out and they’ll look just as complicit, which is another invitation to litigation.
This is an organization that uses clever naming and a modicum of intercompany structuring finesse to present an inaccurate (or more generously stated, incomplete) image to the market (open, it’s not; nonprofit, but not really given its for-profit related party/ies; CEO doesn’t have equity, not in the nonprofit but the whole structure is opaque so who really knows). The board knows exactly how the business is structured, so it seems strange that they are concerned about the CEO’s transparency when they have an org chart that was deliberately and purposefully designed to be the exact opposite.

Boards fire CEOs when they create risk for the shareholders that the board didn’t know about and approve a strategy to mitigate. The most likely suspects in these types of ousters are the same ones that trigger restatements for publicly traded companies: regulatory, tax, and/or IP ownership issues set in motion without the board’s knowledge or in deliberate contravention of their direction.

Back in 2005, Cat Power (a/k/a Chan Marshall) covered Blondie’s cover of the Nerves classic “Hanging On the Telephone” for a Cingular Wireless commercial. To date, Chan has never released her cover. It’s a hauntingly stirring rendition and even though it’s been 18 years, I can’t get the 60-second clip out of my head. Thanks to the internet, there is a recording of the commercial’s soundtrack without the promise of “raising the bar” layered on topmofntjose exquisite vocals. In the absence of Chan releasing a full-length version, I am tempted to start a petition for Florence + The Machine to release a cover it.

I was listening to a podcast recently featuring the founder of new DWeb/Web3 product. He talked about the criticism he’s received related to his built-in-public work.
An interesting feature of this beautiful ecosystem we are living and creating in is that it allows us to build in public, like artists painting in a town square. We are sharing the development process and progress of our projects in real time, being transparent about the ideas, challenges, and milestones, as well as engaging with the community for feedback and collaboration.
Although some commentary the founder speaking on the podcast has received has been encouraging and helpful, much of it has been harsh and unkind. When asked why he remained willing to make himself vulnerable as a creator he responded, “I don’t mind being seen trying.” That line resonated with me.
I’ve been asked why I’m willing to put my journey with mental health out in public, to struggle and recover transparently. The answer is simple: I don’t mind being seen trying. I hope I can inspire others to try, too.
