✅ No friction
✅ Noob friendly
✅ Start making transactions right away
Comes with risks: Passive users, mint centralization, and custodian choice lands on the wallet.
Option 2: Manual mint selection

More common approach. Show users a list of mints (usually via bitcoinmints.com) and ask them to pick one before proceeding.
There’s a third approach I keep circling back to: Just-in-time mint selection.

The wallet doesn’t ask you to choose anything upfront. You’re asked to trust a mint only when you first try to do something, like claim ecash or top up your wallet.
Every approach appeals to different types of users. Depends on what wallet devs want to prioritize too. How and when you throw the decision to the user shapes how they relate to ecash.

I recommend just factory resetting the app and starting fresh. Recovery is may still be wonky. Sovran also uses an underused Nostr feature of mnemonics for account generation. https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/06.md

ecash works a little differently. It’s basically just a custodial LN balance. The way to think about it is: you’ve got some sats with a mint. You can either spend them like normal over lightning, or you can turn some sats into ecash. When you do so those sats are instantly pulled from your balance, and you get an ecash token you can share through text, SMS, NFC, whatever.
To keep things simple I think the balance should always just be shown in sats. That’s what I’m pushing for.

They have different capabilities. The biggest difference is that an ecash transaction has different ways of being shared. You can copy + paste the token and then just share that string. LN is more of a traditional transaction in the sense that it’s atomic, so the information and actions change.
What if we got rid of the distinction between ecash and ln in the title and just displayed the type as a line item?
