Many grant recipients said the same but it truly is both an honor and a privilege to be able to work full time on Bitcoin tech and be part of this movement.
There really aren't many jobs more important today and this grant provides a very needed lifeline which allows all of that, for that I am incredibly grateful
Kibō is already one year old and yet it still feels in its infancy, there many goals still to achieve and ideas to implement.
I really hope that I'll be able to continue working on it for as long as I possibly can
And while this project will forever be completely open source, there are still plans to be profitable with services à la mempool.space like paid hosting. After that I very much intend to return the favor and join the other side as a donater and allow others to join us build a better future
In the meantime I'll keep on building and can't wait to release the massive v0.6 update which is a complete redesign (code wise) of the project with huge improvements for self-hosters and many other changes

As of today, it has been exactly one year since I started working full time on kibō (formerly Satonomics) 🎈
For those who don't know kibō is mainly an open source Bitcoin Core data extractor and visualizer very similar to Glassnode. Which was created out of frustration with the alternatives which either cost an arm and a leg and are against bitcoin values or are very basic and not very useful. kibō is completely free and open source, even the API is free and limitless to allow anyone to use the service no matter their background.
Here's how it went:
Time flew by very fast and I haven't achieved as much as I would've liked but it doesn't really surprise me as there is a lot to do when working alone on such a project to provide I good experience for as many people as possible.
I've updated the website multiple times, removed the font-end framework and went full bare JS to make it as light and fast as possible.
Improved the self-hosting experience, which I plan to make it even better after finishing with the v0.5.
Added many features, datasets and charts.
And of course, fixed bugs.
You can check the CHANGELOG file in the repo if you want a full list of what changed.
Contributors are welcome !
I love the idea of Nostr but for now at least, being Nostr only really limits your reach and by now I really thought that I'd have more users. While I hate to idea of being on X, I might pull the trigger, if there is no improvement in the near future, to widen it which might help with the next point..
Financially, it's not great. The idea of value 4 value is really compelling but it hasn't really worked for me and I wasn't able to find any kind of partners or sponsors for this project. Many love the project and want it to continue but no one is willing to step in and help it long-term.
I'm very grateful to all who donated which allowed me to buy a proper hardware to provide a better service but it's sadly not nearly enough to make a living.
Here's a breakdown:
I've received around 3,100,000 sats which is around $2,800 in the span of 12 months and the vast majority of it went to be hardware and thanks to very few individuals, but let's assume it didn't it, it would've been around $233 per month.
Thankfully during this time I've also had unemployment benefits after quitting my first job to work on this project (which will end soon and) which helped me survive but also weren't enough. I've been slowly selling sats since November 2023 and haven't stacked since.
It might feel like a rant but it's not, I've would've 100% done it again. I'm being transparent so that others who thought about doing the same, can see how it went for me.
Let's hope that the next 365 days will be better

Very pumped to finally release the version 0.4.0 of Satonomics.. or should I say kibō !
On the menu we have:
- a new brand (kibō, hope in japanese, which is what ultimately bitcoin is)
- a new website which was made from the ground up with pure html/css/js
- Easier self-hosting than ever, now that node has been removed, with only rust as the project's dependency
- And many more
It was a lot of work but necessary to keep this project as future proof as possible.

By embedded I mean a database that can be used with code only without having another process running
I’m like 95% sure that redis is slower than lmdb which uses things like memory mapped files but I’ll check again thanks !

Anyone know what’s the fastest embedded key/value store ? (Which is written in Rust or has a Rust wrapper)
I don’t care about safety and consistency, I need pure speed and disk space efficiency
Satonomics has been using for a while now Sanakirja which is quite good but needs a ton of space. Ive tried in the past heed (lmdb) and redb but they were worse performance wise, at least then, I might need to try again, am I missing another player ?

It depends,
if a dataset needs to be parsed from the chain then yes but then the speed varies a lot depending on what you need to parse.
if I only need to parse let's say the block's weight it gonna be super fast because I can skip a lot of things that I already parsed and don't need for that and so, keep the local databases that I have from the previous iteration.
Whereas if I want to parse (or reparse for whatever reason) the amount of sats per address then I need to recompute all the wallet's history and the databases linked to them which is very expensive.
There is also the much more common case when a dataset can be computed from other datasets which very very fast

You might notice that the datasets doesn't seem to be live anymore, it's because I'm currently working on the backend (parser) and need to recompute a whole lot of stuff. Sadly, one of the cons of having the same machine for development and production

I'm happy to finally release a MASSIVE v0.2.0 update of Satonomics (a better, FOSS, Bitcoin-only, self-hostable Glassnode) !

- 5000 datasets by block height (only for desktop and tablets sadly)
- A light theme (still a work in progress)
- Real Settings and various other things in the tab
- Split panes when needed so that you can finally also view the price
- The minimum and maximum values visible on every chart

Actually the data used to be crunched on the user’s machine but it was terrible UX wise (sometimes you need several datasets to compute one) and so everything moved to the server which has the advantage that now people can pull anything via the API. Really weird that your gpu went bunkers, I wonder why ! I did some optimizations in the new version though, which will be live soon, I hope it’ll be better
And yeah I definitely need to add descriptions because some datasets are kind of obscure but there is so much to do first, maybe someone will find some time to do it before I have

Important question for y'all !
It's very hard to not make the charts by height crash mobile browsers due to the chart library and I've tried a stupid amount of things for the past few days.
I've got one solution but it would make the user experience worse for everybody else and for all the charts (even the ones by date).
Would it be reasonable, at least for now, to have charts by block height only available on desktop ? (and maybe large screens in general, it seems to work fine on iPad but I'd need to double check)

It’s the number of utxos but instead of having the dataset by date, it’s much more detailed with a view block by block which are id-ed by their respective height and thus you a chart with ~150 times more data

Thanks ! I knew that I needed a watermark to avoid people just screenshotting and taking all the credit but they really aren't great and look out of place and so I came up with this effect instead ! Which allows to not only have the "brand" which is nice and different
