It was very likely of great assistance to the activist in this case. Had they been using any other email provider, the outcome would have been very different.

The action such as you describe would be detected by the owner of the email address, as they can check their own keys in Key Transparency. In that sense, Key Transparency is a detection mechanism, rather than a prevention mechanism (although it also aims to prevent via deterrence, as malicious behavior would be detected).

There's a difference between proactively violating user privacy and following court orders in criminal cases.
All companies (Proton included) have to follow court orders, but it has been proven multiple times in court that Proton's encryption cannot be bypassed. Proton however can't provide anonymity unless the user has proper infosec (like using Tor or VPN).

@npub1h9h…tyrn We can assure you that Proton's infrastructure has not been compromised, and that these attackers didn't get anything directly from our servers. Even in the unlikely event this happens, attackers wouldn't be able to gain access to the actual emails in an unencrypted form because of zero-access encryption.
The attackers likely got access to the victim's credentials from the victim (phishing attack, social engineering, a compromised device, etc.).

Gmail was used an example, mainly because our EasySwitch allows you to automatically setup email forwarding from your old Gmail account to your new Proton Mail one, in addition to email import.

@npub1rv0…xuyz Hi! It doesn't have to be Gmail. As long as you import emails, contacts and calendars from an external service using our EasySwitch (https://proton.me/easyswitch), you check that one off the list. If there's an issue, make sure to contact us at: https://proton.me/support/contact.
Gmail is given as an example, because, in addition to the import, EasySwitch allows you to set up automatic forwarding from Gmail, without sharing your Proton Mail address with Gmail.
