i spent the last couple of days analyzing other bitcoin podcasts, trying to understand why they get more listeners
the short obvious explanation: they are less technical, more approachable to the masses
the more in-depth explanation: they paint a narrative of "bitcoin vs them".
for example, tales from the crypt is hardly distinguishable from other american conservative shows like tucker carlson's or alex jones' - the major difference is that it inserts bitcoin in the middle of issues as the solution that fixes them.
another example is peter mccormack's show, which admittedly is not about bitcoin anymore. but it does dive into politics and follows certain trends that are popular, while also inserting bitcoin into the conversation as a potential solution.
in stephan livera's case, the narrative is more along the lines of "bitcoin vs cbdcs" or "bitcoin vs the fed". it's a tried and true libertarian plot that seems to work since 2011 or so.
other shows also go deep into the "bitcoin vs vc-funded shitcoins" dichotomy, emphasizing on points about immaculate conception while ignoring any possible criticism that can be addressed to bitcoin. it's simply perfect, no point in ever trying to improve anything.
in comparison, i approach topics from the perspective of my own curiosity and explore technical matters in a way that helps me understand them. the approach is selfish, i know. but it also attracts the kind of audience that i like and to which i can relate.
will the bitcoin takeover podcast become political and start following popular mainstream narratives just to attract a wider audience? no, i'm not interested in any of that. but sometimes it's a little bit frustrating to notice that the growth is slower than my expectations. there's definitely an increase in views/downloads all across the board, but it doesn't really go "viral" in the space.
anyway, i'll just keep going and hope that people in the space get smarter and more interested in finding out what's new and/or understanding how some technical aspects work.
now i know what i'm doing wrong, but i'm not sure it's that "wrong".

What’s funny about the meme is that no super smart early bitcoiner uses non-open source devices like the Coldcard.
It’s just Rodolfo, his cronies, and a bunch of newbs who fell for the marketing.
Ask developers & OGs what they use: they will either say Bitcoin Core/Electrum/Mycelium or if they use hardware wallets at all it’s an old Trezor that’s 100% open source and still works a decade later (unlike Coldcards, which are unreliable and have a new model update every year).

For me at least, the term “shitcoiner” seems to have been applied.
Sort of someone who went to Woodstock, but then also attended other small festivals to recapture the same spirit that was lost.
And I’m fine with it, at least I don’t run post-rationalizations to explain that everything is good for Bitcoin and therefore nothing should ever upset or disappoint me.
I came here for a series of ideas/principles, not to shill an asset ticker.

Maybe they get activated and the builders get everything done.
But it’s up to the users to make them useful.
If it ends up being as niche as Taproot multisigs… well, I don’t want to hang my promises on one bucket of OP codes fixing everything.
To a certain point, it’s like hoping that you will one day be able to hammer nails with a screwdriver. Doable, but there are other tools that are more specialized to get that job done.

Hope it will turn around eventually and we’ll screw them.
Otherwise, unpopular opinion but we can always hard fork into a more cypherpunk version of Bitcoin that we find more useful. It’s inevitable due to the looking 2106 signature bug, might as well add privacy and some OP codes that builders find useful.
Assuming that the current version of Bitcoin ossifies due to lack of consensus to do anything, of course.
Also, on the topic of who benefited from your work: I am proud of you that you didn’t contribute to MIT’s CBDC pilot (project Hamilton or whatever). Other guys had no issue participating, probably thought it’s an inevitable outcome so they might as well play the game and make an extra buck.

I’m happy that I’m not the only one feeling this way.
Some people tell me that I’m just a nerd who can’t enjoy winning. But there’s so much that I wish Bitcoin could do and I feel like the window of opportunity to add upgrades is narrowing down.
I didn’t come here for banks, large custodians and politicians. I came to escape them, now I find it hard to accept that they want to be friends.
Maybe it happened too fast and we all thought we had more time. But I wish Bitcoin had better privacy to be a fungible currency. I also wish we had proper sidechains/extension blocks.
But the biggest problem is that there are too many voices that downplay this conversation and reject any improvement proposal like it’s an attack.
Now that I mentioned all this, I totally understand why you don’t want to speak publicly… there is so much negative stuff that can come out of it. It’s nice when you have a body of work that’s publicly visible and speaks for itself. But it sucks when other people tell your story and manipulate the narrative to paint you as whatever kind of character they find convenient in the context.

I sometimes think I’d have more fun interviewing random people who use bitcoin, like Bitcoin Uncensored used to do back in 2016.
But people don’t care too much about listening unless there’s a big name in the title to stir their interest.
Then again, I’ve interviewed Phil Zimmermann and expected the outcome to be incredible. Was disappointed to find out that bitcoiners don’t care.
They want Michael Saylor and other guys who tell them that they’re smart, super early, and bound to get rich.
