📱 Verifying the deposit address on a second device can help, but is rarely an option on exchanges and cumbersome to use - especially when you don’t have a second device available.

🔐 Introducing payment requests: Exchanges sign your deposit address with their private key, and the BitBox02 verifies this signature against a public key that is stored within its firmware.
This guarantees that you are sending Bitcoin to an address controlled by the exchange.

If the signature for the address does not match the stored public key for the exchange, the BitBox02 rejects the payment request.

This verification happens in the background. All the user has to do is to make sure the BitBox02 displays the correct exchange or service name on its transaction confirmation screen. No need to even check the bitcoin address! ✨

🏦 Verifying banking details: The exchange or service can also choose to include data in the payment request, such as banking details, which will be displayed on the BitBox02 verification screen!
Our first partner to introduce this feature is Pocket Bitcoin, users will soon be able to sell Bitcoin securely from within the BitBoxApp!

The history of hardware wallets:
Using a Bitcoin wallet is (almost) normal today, but when Bitcoin was first created, such wallets didn't exist.
Early Bitcoin users had to rely on rudimentary methods to manage and store their private keys, which were susceptible to high security risks.
Over time, Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs) have revolutionized how users interact with their Bitcoins, significantly enhancing the security and usability of wallets. Here the BIPs that led to hardware wallets:
- BIP32 (2012): Hierarchical Deterministic Wallets
What it is: This BIP introduced a system where all Bitcoin keys could be generated from a single seed, known as Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) Wallets.
Impact: It improved security by reducing the need for frequent backups and enhanced privacy by allowing users to generate new addresses for each transaction, all recoverable from the same seed.
- BIP39 (2013): Mnemonic Code for Generating Deterministic Keys
What it is: BIP39 proposed a method for converting the seed used in an HD wallet into a mnemonic phrase made up of easy-to-remember words.
Impact: It made wallet backup and restoration more user-friendly. Instead of needing to secure complex keys, users can now recover their entire wallet using a simple phrase of common words, thus significantly reducing the risk of errors in recording the seed.
- BIP43 (2014): Purpose Field for Deterministic Wallets
What it is: BIP43 introduced a "purpose field" in the deterministic wallet structure, allowing for multiple different wallet structures under the same seed.
Impact: It provided a method for developers to create specific wallet structures for different applications, all under one master seed, supporting improved organizational strategies.
- BIP44 (2014): Multi-Account Hierarchy for Deterministic Wallets
What it is: BIP44 builds on BIP32 and BIP43 by adding a specific structure for creating multiple accounts within the same wallet.
Impact: It enabled users to have different accounts (like savings, checking, investment, etc.) under one master seed. Each account can have its own chain of addresses, enhancing both privacy and organization.
These advancements, as proposed and implemented in the respective BIPs, address various aspects of security, usability, and functionality in Bitcoin wallet management.
For hardware wallets, these proposals meant that users could not only secure their Bitcoins more effectively but also enjoy greater ease in managing multiple accounts and addresses under a single device.
This reminds us of how Satoshi Nakamoto, by releasing the Bitcoin code, gifted the world one of the greatest technologies we have ever seen. However, developers have continued to introduce new updates to enhance its usability, and this will likely continue for decades, perhaps even centuries.

🚨 Two days ago, we received a concerning support request: An app that appeared to be the BitBoxApp asked the user to enter their recovery words.
This was clearly a phishing attempt by an attacker trying to steal the users funds.
Here's what happened: 👇

The victim has had his BitBox02 for multiple months already. One day, after plugging in their BitBox02, the BitBoxApp flashed and displayed the above screen.
Knowing he wasn't supposed to enter his recovery words on a computer, he immediately contacted our support. 💪
Together with the victim, we figured out that a malicious BitBoxApp clone was placed on his computer. It does not replace the BitBoxApp, but is installed in another folder.
Once the original BitBoxApp has been opened, it minimizes the original BitBoxApp and displays the malicious "Bitbox.exe" over all other content.
The malware also appear to take screenshots to surveil the victim. 🚨

We were able to trace the origin of the malware to a malicious website.
The victim used DuckDuckGo to search for "wasabi wallet" and ended up downloading a malicious installer.
This is an extremely easy mistake to make, as there are multiple phishing sites in the top results.

We have reached out to Wasabi Wallet and they assured us they do everything in their power to get rid of these fake sites.
It is necessary for DuckDuckGo to take action and make sure these malicious websites don't appear in their search results.
To make sure this does not happen to you, you should always verify exactly where you are downloading programs from.
This is also why we provide instructions on how to verify the signatures for our BitBoxApp before you run them:

Their fast and correct response made it possible for us to figure this out really fast and warn other users. We've already shipped them a small 'thank you' package to show our gratitude. 🙏
In the end the BitBox02 did exactly what it was supposed to:
It protected the users wallet when their PC got compromised.
Would the victim have used a software wallet, chances are high that their money would have been stolen.

What if you have a wallet securing a lot of money and even the smallest chance of your funds becoming inaccessible is worth addressing?

With miniscript, you can create backups that are timelocked and can only access your wallet after a certain amount of time has passed.
These timelocked backups can be handed to friends and family (or even companies) without worrying about them stealing money from you.

These timelocks can also be used in multisignature wallets to create elaborate spending conditions, like a family wallet that can always be used my mother and father, but includes an inheritence path that can be used by son and daughter together after a certain while.

Because the timelocks start once the transaction is received, it is necessary to "refresh" the coins before the timelock runs out and other spending paths become available.
To do this, all the user has to do is to send a transaction to themselves, resetting the timelock to 0.
