"Nothing can exist without order. Nothing can come into being without chaos."
This quote by Albert Einstein inspired me deeply. 'Bitcoin - Born from Chaos' tells how this quote applies not only to the workings of the universe, but also to the greatest renaissance.
At the heart of this artwork is a figure whose face is unrecognizable. It appears behind a gravestone and in front of a stone monument with inscriptions.
The gravestone is adorned with the inscription "∞/21,000,000" and the words: IN LOATHSOME MEMORY OF FIAT, INFLATION AND THEFT BROUGHT INTO THE WORLD BY LIES AND INTRIGUE ON AUGUST 15, 1971 AND REDEEMED FROM IT ON JANUARY 3, 2009.
Taking root from the soil of the grave, a plant grows in deep orange and makes its way in all directions. It is supposed to represent the Bitcoin organism, which germinates from the remains of the dead fiat system.
There is a lot of text in my drawing. I would like to explain the sections in more detail below.
I engraved the Bitcoin whitepaper on the left half of the stone plate with extreme precision. Impossible without my 0.1mm fineliner.
On the right is the Cypherpunk's Manifesto, published by Eric Hughes in 1993. For me, these two publications form the cornerstone of the greatest renaissance of our age and have sown the seeds that have been growing out of a dying system, characterized by chaos and problems.
The upper third deals with the raw hex version of the Genesis block. If Bitcoin were the universe, the Genesis Block would represent the Big Bang. After this moment, there is no more change of direction. The die is cast.
Part of this Raw Hex version is the defining and underlying message of the Bitcoin network, Satoshi Nakamoto's 'Chancellor on the brink of second bailout for banks', who immortalized this New York Times headline from January 3, 2009 in the Genesis Block.
If there is one message that moves me the most, and as a bitcoiner I wish more people would take it seriously or at least think about it, it's this: 'Inflation is worse than people think and Bitcoin better than they believe'.
Last but not least, as always, I have included my signature, the block time of the first and last pencil stroke.

For each Halving, I will create a tribute, all identical in structure and seamlessly connected, like one Bitcoin block to the next. After three months of working on this series, the upcoming Halving will mark the end of this series for the time being. I will draw part 5 in 2027/2028, when the fifth Halving takes place with block 1,050,000.
The central circular chart filled up again another 210000 blocks later. At the first Halving it was 50% filled clockwise, at the second Halving it was already 75% full and at the block of the third Halving 87.5% as 87.5% (18,375,000 Bitcoin) of all Bitcoin ever available. For the last part of this series for the time being, Halving IV, this circle will be 93.75% full.
Below are a few basic facts and figures about block 630000, which I have included in the drawing:
-the first block of the fourth epoch.
-took place on May 11, 2020.
-Block subsidy: 6.25 Bitcoin/block.
-Supply: 18,375,000 Bitcoin (87.5%).
-The median fee for the third Halving block was ~90 sat/vB.
-3134 transactions and a storage space requirement of 1.19 MB are included in this block.
-The hash of block 630000: 00000000000000000000024bead8df69990852c202db0e0097c1a12ea637d7e96d. Note the number of zeros at the beginning. Whereas there were 13 zeros at halving I, one Halving later there are already 17 zeros and 19 zeros at the third halving. This shows the increasing mining difficulty: the more zeros at the beginning of the hash, the more hashes per second were required to determine the valid block. This number of zeros will also increase with each Halving.
-The approximate hashrate that secured the network to block 630000: ~139.25 EH/s. During Halving II, it was still around 1.5 EH/s. This means that the hash rate increased by a factor of 100 in the period from 2016 to 2020!
A closer look reveals a few other elements that should of course be familiar to die-hard Bitcoiners.
The drawing measures 29.7 x 42cm / 11.6 x 16.5". Drawn with many pencils varying in hardness on thick, 290/m² rough drawing cardboard.

For each Halving, I will create a homage, all of which are identical in structure and follow each other seamlessly, like one Bitcoin block after the next. Halving II, III and IV will be added over the next few months. In 2028, I will continue this series with Halving V.
Of course, the focus is always on the respective Halving block. The series begins with block 210000. When I was first thinking about a concept for the artistic theming of the Halving, I immediately thought of @npub1jdg…2mys's Timechain Calendar and was inspired by his ingenious gem.
The circular arrangement is not only graceful in many ways, but also symbolic: on the one hand, the circle stands for perfection, calm and strength. Attributes that I associate with Bitcoin.
The circle unites the beginning (A) and the end (Ω), is a perfect system in itself and with the axial and rotational symmetry, a lot can be conjured up in terms of design:
I have added a subtle pie chart in the background, which expands clockwise with each halving drawing by the respective amount of Bitcoin issued within an epoch. For Halving I it is 50%, 10.5M Bitcoin.
For Halving II, this circle will show 75%, as 75% of all Bitcoin ever available was in circulation at block 420000. For Halving III it was 87.5%, and soon Halving IV: 93.75%. So all drawings have a nice connection and you can see the monetary development in relation to time.
By the way, have you noticed this lovely mathematical detail about Bitcoin: the block subsidy prevailing at each epoch is always the nominal percentage of the total amount of Bitcoin in circulation for that epoch.
Here are a few facts and figures about block 210000, which I have included in the drawing: the first block of the second epoch.
- took place on November 28, 2012.
- block subsidy: 25 Bitcoin/block.
- supply: 10,500,000 Bitcoin (50%).
The median fee for the first Halving block was ~387 sat/vB.
Just 457 transactions and a storage requirement of just under 200kB are contained in this block. I have used the representation from mempoolspace here as I find it very illustrative.
The hash of block 210000: 0000000000048b95347e83192f69cf0366076336c639f9b7228e9ba171342e.
Note the low number of zeros at the beginning. It will increase significantly in the following Halving drawings as the difficulty grows.
The approximate hashrate that prevailed at block 210000. It was around 28TH/s, which in turn is 0.000028 EH/s and thus less than 0.00001% of the current hash rate compared to today's values (~500EH/s). The development of the Bitcoin network will also be very noticeable here.
To emphasize the character of a series of drawings that expands every ~ 4 years, I have added a 'Halving barometer' to the left half. It consists of 32 small, empty blocks and with each Halving the next block is filled with the number of the respective Halving.
On the right half is a clock face calibrated to "210000", which also carries the two blocks before and after the Halving block. These figures also change with each drawing.
The lower half is engraved with messages associated with Bitcoin in Latin: "VBI LIBERTAS IBI PATRIA" (where there is freedom, there is my home) and "ALEA IACTA EST" (the dice have been cast). These words are musically proclaimed and celebrated by little angels.
There are still a few little Easter eggs lovingly incorporated.
And, obviously, my fondness for human sculptures is not to be missed.
To give the drawing a proper finish, I added the block times at the time of the first and last pencil stroke.

Over the next 4-5 months, I aim to complete the first three halvings and then in line with the fourth halving, the fourth drawing. It will be a lot of work and extremely detailed!
