For me, #BitcoinPizzaDay is a day of giving back to people who are struggling with hunger, homelessness, and economic injustice.
We like to say, “Bitcoin fixes this,” and “Fix the money, fix the world.” I think a lot about how things get fixed, and from my perspective, it makes even more sense to say, “Bitcoiners fix this.”
Eight years ago, what almost feels like another lifetime, I tried an experiment in giving back. I used a long-forgotten app called ChangeTip to raise about $240 in one day from plebs around the world, which was the cost of one full bitcoin at the time. As soon as the goal was reached, I bought 10 pizzas on Foodler (the first food ordering app in the US that accepted bitcoin) for delivery to the Bowery Mission, a charity and temporary residence for homeless New Yorkers.
I did all of this publicly on social media, and people just had to trust that I was being honest with them. Experiences like this one have shown me that the global bitcoin community has overwhelmingly had its 🧡 in the right place, and its generosity has inspired me to keep doing the work.
And if you ever wondered what 1 BTC worth of pizza looked like in 2015, here it is!
