I've been sewing gloves on a borrowed sewing machine, a Janome 2212, because all my sewing machines are antique treadles that only do straight stitches, although they do them magnificently. To sew stretchy cotton-spandex knit I need a zigzag. My friend promised her machine to someone else so I ordered my own new one, a Janome Mod-18. It arrived defective, dropping stitches and apparently being unfixable by the user (I removed the cover plate and could see the needle/hook timing was off, but no way to fix). So I sent it back to Amazon and they sent a replacement, which worked fine until it didn't. After one day it too was dropping stitches as badly as the first. So back it went today, and I looked locally for a vintage zigzag machine but no local thrift stores had anything suitable, so I went on eBay and made an offer for a vintage Necchi BU. If the seller accepts my offer I automatically buy it, so I have to wait 24 hours before buying something else. Really clean vintage Necchis are thin on the ground so I'm once again considering a new machine, this time a Bernette. Although I hear their current all-mechanical models are made by...Janome.
