Pierre outlined the cost in dollars and storage space, and I agree: we’ll be ok bearing those costs.
That said, I don’t see everyone needing to run a node for BTC to win, and I’m sure not even half of the world will ever run a node, let alone most people.
For technical reasons it is just not possible for everyone to transact on base layer, so it doesn’t make sense for everyone to run their node if they’re not verifying their own transactions.
Most transactions will have to happen through custodians, at different level of centralization and trust, on layer 2 and above.
And it’s not a bad thing.
Getting to mass adoption is more important than running a node right now, so financial education trumps technical education (but of course if we could do both, then we should do both).
Some people won’t ever understand nodes and hardware wallets and multisigs because they're just not wired to grok it… but they can grasp a Wallet of Satoshi, maybe even a Muun.
It’s a good thing to have different options for different people, and people holding sats through a custodian, or a fedimint, or a any hot wallet beats holding a fiat/CBDC anytime.
Running nodes will help in a fight with nation states, but as mentioned above, a few trustworthy, hardcore nodes will have to carry most of the load.
Because if we have a nation-state technical attack (highly doubtful, the attack will come through political and legal channels and of course CBDCs), even if you run a node with tor over vpn, it'll be worthless if they turn off your internet.
The real battlefield is in the mind of the nocoiners: If enough people get to understand how fiat is stealing from them, and how this is the root of most of the world's problems, then they might see Bitcoin as the solution and fight to adopt it however they can.
And no amount of nation-state power will be able to stop an idea whose time has come.
