People who teach the "soul sleep" doctrine -- that the human spirit does not consciously survive the body at death -- think they interpret the Bible literally, because in it death is described as sleep.
I used to believe that was the "literal" interpretation, too.
But it turns out, I learned, that death is not literally the same thing as sleep. There are some critical differences.
