I keep thinking that there must be a way to simply ask a machine intelligence if it is conscious or not.
Humans are able to report when we are actively thinking, what thinking is like (some people think exclusively in language, apparently, which is remarkable to me since that isn't my experience) to what degree we can visualize objects etc.
Of course there are two problems with "just asking":
-the machine could lie
-the machine could have no frame of reference for what is being asked
