trying to finish “the difference engine” but I think I know why I can’t remember the ending from my last reading now: I don’t think I finished it last time either. I’m having a hard time staying invested in this battle between silly anarchists & over-credulous petty burgers. The most interesting character, the slave, just wandered away. I feel like cotton bails are a metaphor but I’m too exhausted to guess for what. Wished I’d listened to those who kindly warned me not to try to read it again.
