Recently, the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia issued a statement concerning concerning dangerous trends in Russia related to the Soviet past. Here are some of the most notable excerpts.

On the resurgence of communist ideology:
We observe among some circles a tendency to replace the pursuit of Christian repentance and spiritual renewal with a return to the false and ungodly doctrines that dominated in the previous century. We fear that if this trend continues, Russia—once a shining example of Orthodox faith, called to serve as a beacon of Christian truth—will instead become a dark blot among nations.

On the official treatment of history:
...Recently, a change has become apparent in Russia’s official approach to history. The "Concept of State Policy for the Preservation of the Memory of Victims of Political Repression," which addresses those convicted during the communist regime, was revised in 2024. Compared to the 2015 version, significant modifications have been made that are concerning for Orthodox faithful, as they seem to aim at minimizing the crimes of the godless regime of the 20th century. <...>

Rather than fostering a clear understanding of the true nature of the criminal regime that caused countless victims in Russia over the decades, and rather than encouraging a deep remembrance of the tragedies endured by the people, the new "Concept" appears to regress, restricting this spiritually vital subject. The previous version opened a path toward repentance on many issues. The new one closes it. This shift results from the suppression and distortion of historical facts.

On monuments to Stalin and Lenin’s mausoleum:
In practice, this attitude is most blatantly demonstrated by the disturbing erection of monuments honoring the criminal figures of Stalin and Dzerzhinsky in Moscow, as if in public veneration—figures whose inhuman and anti-Christian atrocities rank among the worst crimes of the twentieth century. Similarly, recent statements indicate that the idolatrous mausoleum on Red Square, rather than being dismantled, will be restored.

And regarding the relics of the royal family:
We lament that the Moscow Patriarchate, despite the findings of the commission confirming the authenticity of the relics of the Royal Family and their servants, has yet to reach a decision on this matter.
