IMO Meta’s angle is that the Fediverse is a potential competitor, and they want to get in the game early so they can ride the wave if the Fediverse takes off.

If I were to take a bet, Meta will create a new service (“Threads”, I hear it’s called) which will allow current Meta users to use their logins to automatically get an account on the service; in fact, I bet they will *require* a Meta login. They’ll probably launch a mobile app and a website to browse its content. They will promote the service on FB and IG and invite their members to try out their new service. They will show ads in their new app/website as soon as they have enough metrics to do so.

I think Meta’s angle is not to embrace/extend/extinguish the Fediverse. They will probably start by monetizing this service by adding “Share to Threads” to their FB and IG items, to entice Fedi users to click on links to visit Meta properties.
