I really want to learn to write a DOS sound driver so I can do something like Zone 66 or PPZ8 (on the PC98) did and have multiplexed drums/similar on the PCM channel.
A lot of western gamedevs/demosceners went for "use the PCM as a codec for mod players in software" route instead, while Japan's method is more associated with arcade games and the distinct sound used in later PC-98 games.
However one western game notably did this, and it was Zone 66:
