While it doesn't happen as much here as certain other platforms, you will see troll here from time to time. They can often be more insidious than you'd think.

They will ask questions with easily searchable answers with a negative context.

"What did that movement actually even accomplish?"

"Why does this group think they deserve...when...?"

These people are not "Just asking questions", if they cared, they could find the answers themselves. This isn't to say you shouldn't provide sources when you can, but you don't have to engage with clear bait.

They will minimize the efforts of every day people.

"Me Too didn't help anyone."

"Anything you try is bound to fail."

"The Rich always win."

They ALWAYS punch down, and sow seeds of fear.

Their tactics always bully people who they consider "lower" than them.

They spread misinformation, conspiracy theories, and redirect.

"This can't be just climate change, it's almost like someone is controlling the weather."

"Women just want all men neutered, so they control everything."

Sometimes it can be difficult to see who is actually wanting more information and legitimate sources, but you can view a pattern of behavior and just block if necessary. Trolls feed on attention and discord, and I know, it can be extremely difficult to not feed them. I often make the joke:

Mastodon will fact check everything, even your jokes.

So, if you see someone demanding information and sowing doubt, it's a pretty good sign. Real Mastodonites do their own homework, as well as other people's. LOL
