The best habit I gave myself in the past year or two: when I see a visual artist I like, I write down that artist's name, year of birth, year of death, and country of birth. I have never remembered artist names, and now I don't have to — and I have a list of what to look at which gives me slack instead of foolishly looking at what takes my slack away. Now I have names to learn more about, which leads to more names and more schools of visual art. Now I can see patterns of what I like.
