It's a hell of a thing.
I haven't had to deal with it myself (thank God; "lucky" me, I get the reverse problem, where I'm irrationally terrified of death and fall into spirals thinking about my own mortality and bathing my organs in useless levels of adrenaline trying to figure out how to never die!). But I've loved enough people in my life who do.
The mental model I carry around right now is "How much control do you have over your dreams? Do you get angry at yourself when you have a bad dream? Some people's brains are like that while they're awake too; they don't want to think about this thing, but they can't stop their brain just thinking about it."
We like to think of ourselves as masters of our own bodies and brains but there are a lot of times when we're along for the ride.
