If you've ever dealt with suicidal ideation, people like to tell you things like, "You need to learn to live for yourself." Which just feels like a fundamental misunderstanding of the whole thing. Sometimes I've needed an external thing, I don't want to give my brother that level of grief, or I can't leave my pets alone, sometimes you need something, even if it just seems stupid. It's ridiculous to tell people to throw away their life preserver, if they're still learning to swim. Maybe it's not ideal, but Survival needs to trump idealism sometimes.
