I have realised after living with PR for 16 years that hard right parties are almost universally terrible at actual governing.

They prefer to snipe from sidelines without facing compromises of being in government. Sometimes letting them have some power is an effective safety valve against further gains, given people can judge them on actual performance.

But you also need to have very robust balancing civil institutions too. And people need to care about their own democracy.
