We're now aware of it in different ways b/c of the kinds of media expressions available. Not to say we should give up on trying to encourage deliberation and proper conversation -quite the opposite. Let's not hark back to a non-existent golden age of rational discourse. Public conversations have always struggled against prejudice, dismissals etc. Heck; a classical education included rhetoric: =how to manipulate a crowd.
