During a novus ordo Mass, why is it only a priest or deacon can proclaim the Word of God through the Gospel?
I ask only because every lady and her neighbor ends up being an "extraordinary" minister of Holy Communion -- handling the Word of God in the Real Presence of the Eucharist.
Is reading the Gospel more sacred than handling the Blessed Sacrament?
