I've reconsidered my statement at the end of this article, saying a Monero fork would be ideal, instead of an upgrade.
The benefits I explained are valid, but the complication is this:
It would be most efficient to add timed transactions to Monero first, before any other crypto, but Monero requiring a maximized anonymity set makes it kinda the worst crypto to split between the original and a fork.
I was instinctively feeling like the strength of a better Monero should be combined with the strength of a better launch, to maximize results, but it's probably actually better to have Monero upgraded with this functionality instead of forked to a new network.
This makes me think a new meme coin would be a good way to get that kind of decentralization, but the problem with that is the meme coin generators out there making so many copies of tokens with every possible name you could use, the market just doesn't have the space for a new meme coin the same way it did 11 years ago.
Decentralized spread of awareness via meme is less available now. I can't think of an alternative with similar strength.
However, a centralized backer to push awareness could fix this without undermining the decentralization of the network itself.
It's hard to think of who could work as a centralized backer at nostr's current size. The global deep state's dominance ensures there aren't many people with an audience who would or could start doing leadership. To undermine Uncle Sam Dinobux, one would have to attack the practice of filing taxes, which doesn't seem to get you boosted by the YouTube algorithms.
I've heard North Koreans don't have to file taxes, so maybe they could work. If they created a meme coin, gave it worldwide publicity, and launched it with a good open-source tor-connected wallet and mining .apk file for Android users, it might take off and establish a better level of decentralization than other cryptocurrencies of the past.
Hard to imagine North Korea being based enough to do all that though.
If no centralized backer can/will do it, maybe nostr just needs more growth in order to match the power of meme as a decentralized way to raise awareness, before a new crypto network like this can be launched.
Or maybe no new crypto network is needed and all we've gotta do is give Monero timed transactions, and a good Tor-connected Android mining app.
