The DeBeers scam is something that everyone should know about. They've created artificial scarcity by hoarding and controlling the supply of a common gemstone, and driving demand through dishonest and deceptive marketing. And now that they can be easily and cheaply manufactured in a lab, the scam is more insidious. Lab diamonds are chemically identical to natural stones, so DeBeers has promoted the idea that they're inferior to their natural stones, creating the notion that lab diamonds are a cheap knockoff of the real thing. This allows them to maintain the fraud.
