There is a lot to discover, but most things can be done solo until you finish the game for the first time!
It gets much trickier on the late-game though, as there still a lot of hidden content after finishing the game for the first time, and THAT hidden content can be VERY cryptic. So it's not like it's not designed for solo players, but more like it's much better to investigate as a community, like the 90's feeling of sharing game secrets with other players.
