Unlike popular conception not all of Japan is Tokyo. The only reason I got a drivers license was because I got engaged and knew I had to move here - in Sweden I had no need for a license.
But the distances are probably shorter and you spend more time in traffic than moving so you don’t need as much size and power as in the US. It really still seems like the Wild West.
