the predominant belief among Americans for much of the 20th century seems to have been "if you just work hard enough, you will be rewarded"
the Germans thought so too around the 30s and 40s. it did not work that way.
America did not have the Holocaust so they took longer to learn the lesson.
recent trends i'm seeing in America suggests that maybe they're finally coming around a bit. to think about the human perspective. that sometimes, life just deals you a blow. so we need backup systems for that.
