Four sides model
Also known as communication square or four-ears model
According to this model every message has four facets though not the same emphasis might be put on each. The four sides of the message are
- fact,
- self-disclosure,
- social relationship between sender and receiver,
- wish or want.
- The "Factual Level" contains statements which are matter of fact like data and facts.
- In the "self-revealing" or "self-disclosure" the speaker - deliberately or unintentionally - reveals something about him or herself, their motives, values, emotions etc.
- In the "relationship-layer" the speaker expresses, how the sender gets along with the receiver and what they think of each other.
- The "wish or want" contains the plea or desire, the advice, instruction and possibly the effects which the speaker is seeking.
Example:
In a relationship, one side says to the other:
"It is cold."
Speaker:
- Factual: the temperature is low.
- Self revealing: I am cold.
- Relationship: You should know I am a "cold-type".
- Wish or want: Turn up the heater.
Listener:
- Factual: the temperature is low.
- Self revealing: He/she is cold.
- Relationship: I shall know that he/she is a cold type.
- Wish or want: Never let the temperature to be too low.
Of course, every layers can be misunderstood on their own. But if the 2 sides puts the emphasis on different layers, it can create a big misunderstanding.
Understanding this model, can help us identify possible misunderstandings, or even reason for anger. Also can help understanding ourselves, why we get angry, upset, etc on a simple factual message.
