Even small effects can be huge discoveries. It's obviously well known that electric current breaks water to component atoms, but to have that current available 5km down on the seafloor well below where sunlight penetrates is very surprising. It can't be a chemical reaction either, because the rocks' chemistry would have worn down over millennia. A heat related conversion? Huge in any event.
