"content": "The best \"cheap plastic\" design for external USB backup drives is IMO the one used by the WD My Book / Element type of drives. They're plastic, but stand the drive vertically and have vent screens at the top and bottom of the enclosure. Hot air rises and cooler air gets sucked in through the bottom. Entirely passive ventilation, but the chimney effect is better than nothing, which is what most external USB drives offer.",
