All previous phones technically are still functional, but many may no longer be supported by the network. Mind you, I have a client who went to get phone fixed (battery life wasn't good) which on being told to sign up for a more expensive contract, pay $60+ up front, I went and bought a replacement battery and so far have got about 4 more years out of it.
